Interview with SUN JIAN at Friday 1st of May 2020 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? JS: Forpet is a beloved brand of dog food on sale in China and elsewhere. The inspiration of the design comes from the commitment of Forpet dog food with unconditional care for all dogs. As a caring caregiver and a leader in pet health, Forpet is designed to strike a balance between warmth and expertise, making Forpet a versatile product.Every dog is here was the choosen statement for Forpet and a series brand was designed. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? JS: The humanized packaging design consists of a series of five hand-drawn watercolor illustrations of dogs as a dog family, stressing the Forpet is commitment to caring for every dog. The watercolor illustrations of five dogs are vivid and give a sense of spirituality. They can be used in combination with different flavors of dog food packaging, giving Forpet a colorful story. These watercolor illustrations are warm and friendly dog faces, which retain a strong sense of individuality. The design encourage people to discover the dog is multiple characters and emphasize that dogs need a healthy life. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? JS: Every year, we will select good works to participate in the competition, so that the industry can recognize our design results. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? JS: It took about 2 months from the strategy to the implementation of the manuscript. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? JS: The design encourages people to discover multiple characteristics of dogs and emphasizes that dogs need a healthy life. This design was commissioned by us. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? JS: Our design was produced by another company and sold its production rights. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? JS: The design was inspired by Forpet ’s commitment to provide unconditional care for all dogs. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? JS: My previous design team for the emblem of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games had a great influence on me. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? JS: Many people now like to keep pets, dog health is the biggest problem, dog food can extend life FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? JS: I use random drawing methods when creating hand-painted, looking for the imaginary dog shape to ensure that each dog has a unique personality. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? JS: Forpet是在中国和其他国家/地区出售的备受欢迎的狗粮品牌。 该设计的灵感来自对所有狗只提供无条件护理的Forpet狗粮的承诺。 FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? JS: Gouache fuel and computer software. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? JS: The humanized packaging design consists of a series of five hand-drawn watercolor illustrations of dogs as a dog family, The watercolor illustrations of five dogs are vivid and give a sense of spirituality. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? JS: I created the whole design by myself. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? JS: The bags are made of aluminum foil inside and mounted polypropylene plastic outside with intaglio four-color printing and bronzing process. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? JS: The Forpet dog food had a remarkable sales performance during the Tmall.com 11.11 Shopping Festival. According to the feedback of the packaging from customers, the design is novel and friendly, and it was well recognized. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? JS: The packaging is opaque and of high cost. Due to the thermal expansion and shrinkage of plastic, it does not apply for high humidity areas or for external packaging. Outside mounted polypropylene plastic is needed. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? JS: Based on the feedback of the product in the market, we will submit an international design competition if the response is good and loved by everyone. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? JS: Every time the creation process is painful, we need to consult a large amount of information to understand the industry and understand the hearts of customers. I continue to work hard. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? JS: No other problem.
