Interview with Eastcolight (Hong Kong) Limited at Wednesday 15th of May 2019

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
ED: We are always looking for an easy way to let children learn with fun. The best way to learn human body is to go inside to look at it, which cannot be done by a book or physical model. By using AR technology, kid can learn by 3D interactive model and study the structure from the physical anatomy model. We have spent a lot of time in the research and development of this product. These anatomy models are consulted by over 10 specialists, and we provide the best to the kids.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
ED: The design goal is to combine physical and virtual learning experience. User points the smartphone camera on to the anatomy model to see the organs in AR. User can tap on the organ model parts to learn interesting facts, split the model into parts in AR or start the quiz game and check their knowledge of anatomy. Kids can also use the smartphone to capture photo/ shoot video with the AR anatomy models, share or upload to the social media directly. With respect to the design, we renovate the traditional way of learning into an interactive, fun and attractive way. In order to provide the most accurate and relevant information to the kids, we consulted over 10 specialists for these anatomy models.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
ED: The success of AR human Science Series are encourage our design team to develop more AR toy. We start to promote this series to worldwide with positive feedback. We would like to extent this product line with different organs and more interactive gameplay or content.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
ED: From concept, App content, product, packaging and accessary, we are spend nearly 12 months to develop this product.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
ED: We are toy company with our own factory. Our product are focus on educational toy, such as STEM toy, telescope and microscope. We also provide design service to our client for ODM/OED project and open door for any potential cooperation.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
ED: We are produced by ourselves and sale to worldwide. We are welcome for any buyer or retailer to exclusive our product to their country.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
ED: This product is designed for children who are interested on human biology. The best way to learn human body is to go inside to look at it, which cannot be done by a book or physical model. So we develop an interactive toy that kids can go through each of our body’s system by 3D interactive model and study the structure from the physical anatomy model. We also provide a camera and video function, because we know that sharing can let kids learn better. When they are making the video, they will learn the name of organ parts through messages. When they interact with the virtual organ, they are thinking and understanding the body parts which allow them to experience and absorb all the knowledge. We have spent a lot of time in the research and development of this product. These anatomy models are consulted by over 10 specialists, and we provide the best to the kids.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
ED: I work my own in this project, from design concept, product modification, game interface design, packaging and menu design. This is the first project that I work through each part by myself.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
ED: We work for kids.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
ED: AR Human Science series is a new generation of educational toy. It uses the smartphone app to interact with anatomy model and discover how every aspect of the body functions. We combine physical and virtual learning experience together which cannot be find in existing market. One of the anatomy toy in market with AR technology, they bundle with a AR booklet which did not relate to the anatomy model.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
ED: In this series, we have 6 different organ parts: Brain, Eye, Teeth, Heart, Lung, and Human Torso. Those anatomy model with AR effect. So we call it 'AR Human Science Series'.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
ED: We use AI, Photoshop, Rhinos, Pro-E. Those are common software in design industrial.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
ED: In this project, our first challenge is 'How to turn a textbook into a new format that children like'. We spend a lot of time in children research and learning behavior. And we find that the best way to learn human body is to go inside to look at it, which cannot be done by a book or physical model. Adopting 4D model and AR technology can reveal the unseen parts of human body which is a powerful and effective way to let children to explore the human function, system and the inter-relationship of organs. It opens up visual and sensual experience in alternative media to enhance learning. By using AR technology, kid can learn by 3D interactive model and study the structure from the physical anatomy model.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
ED: For this project, we are collaborate with App company 'Devar'. we need to work with specialized in AR technology, discuss the App interface design and game flow together.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
ED: AR technology is very important for this design. As I mention before the best way to learn human body is to go inside to look at it, which cannot be done by a book or physical model. With the help of AR animation, kid can understand how it works easily. We use AR technology to break through the traditional product.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
ED: We have spent a lot of time in the research and development of this product. These anatomy models are consulted by over 10 specialists, and we provide the best to the kids.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
ED: We are facing the technical challenge of 'How to integrate AR technology with the physical model'. When applying AR technology, we developed several AR interface designs to find the most suitable one for this product. We need to solve some technical problem such as misplacement between the 3D model and physical model and change of lighting condition that affects the accuracy of recognition.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
ED: When we submit a design for competition, we will consider on several aspect: innovation, cosmetic, functionality, learning value, user experience

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
ED: I find that AR technology is very useful. It can help people to share their imagination and provide new learning experience. It is not only for product, we can apply AR in our city.
