Interview with Ghazaleh Lebaschi at Monday 13th of May 2019

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
GL: I am inspired by my past architectural projects and books for creating connections and exploring harmonies between these two fields of art, Jewelry design and architecture.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
GL: I wanted to create a piece of jewellery that would create a strong reaction in it’s uniqueness.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
GL: I am working to complete the collection based on my winning design to complete the collection. Hopefully we will launch this collection by September in Dubai.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
GL: The project initiated at the end of 2017 in Florence and was produced in Valenza in Italy in 2018.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
GL: I am used to designing jewellery on commission but this time I wanted to design a piece that represent myself. I studied Architecture in Florence before obtaining my master degree in Jewellery engineering at Polytechnic of Turin. I always wanted to design a piece that recalls a monument. Creating connections and exploring harmonies focusing on Architecture and the technical aspect, a jewel that needs engineering skills to be able to produce.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
GL: The future collection will be produced by “Privato Gioielli Firenze” company, under my name.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
GL: For creating the Opera Ring I researched my architectural projects and books but the main influence was the Sydney Opera House.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
GL: I don’t feel to categorise a target customer for this ring I think it can be worn and appreciated by a wide age group that want to be unique.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
GL: It is very difficult for me to compare this ring to other pieces because of it’s uniqueness.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
GL: Actually Opera as the name of the ring has double significance. Firstly, In Italian Opera d’arte signifies a work of Art! secondly, it recalls the Opera house of Sydney from where I gained most influence.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
GL: I think it’s uniqueness and preciseness is enhanced by a very high quality and complexity of manufacturing makes this ring so particular. Forms and frequencies are used over and over to create a perfect aesthetic balance of lines and shapes. Each element is hollow inside so the stones receive more light and shine brighter as well as making this ring lighter weight. The beauty is the precision and exactness of the structure combined with meticulous details.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
GL: My manufacturer BMC SPA in Valenza Italy, where I used to work, who have always been extremely helpful and guiding at each step.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
GL: I think producing great quality of High jewelry is not possible without using High technology these days. Technology will help manufacturers to be more precise, having a better quality in micro fusion or etc, but, all in all the beauty of Opera ring is the art and patience of the manufacturer.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
GL: I had very good feedback from the Opera ring by my clients and also I had a very short time to nominate this design, both were a great challenge for me to participate in this international competition.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
