Interview with Katrina Stevens at Thursday 23rd of May 2019 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? KS: MAAC’s vision and purpose is to conserve wildlife by raising funds through large scale music festivals and events. My goal was to create a logo which represents their two fields - wildlife conservation and music - to give the viewer an immediate understanding of the organisations objective. The elephant represents wildlife whilst the trunk and tusk form a crotchet, a symbol synonymous with the musical art form. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? KS: My main focus was to convey the organisations objectives using one, clever logo. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? KS: This concept only took one afternoon - which is rare. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? KS: I was commissioned by the co-founder of the organisation to create a new brand identity. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? KS: In the past, I worked with many talented senior designers/creative directors. I use what they taught me every single day. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? KS: People who are passionate about animal welfare. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? KS: The name already existed. I was in charge of creating only the logo. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? KS: Classic pen and paper to brainstorm the concept and Adobe Illustrator to execute it. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? KS: The most unique aspect is how well the two objectives fit together inside the logo. It's as if it was meant to be. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? KS: I worked by myself. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? KS: Technology was used to create a vector version of the logo. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? KS: Many bad ideas were produced before I was able to come up with this one. But that’s what creativity is - trial and error. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? KS: I had received an email from the competition asking if I was interested in nominating my design. At first I was a little nervous about doing so, because I didn't think I could win, but I'm really glad I put my fears aside and did it anyway.
