Interview with Matthew Dorabiala at Wednesday 11th of November 2020 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? MD: The main idea for this piece came very spontaneously, however, as my development of this project expanded I found that it closely ties with my passion for classical shapes often considered to be perfect. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? MD: I wanted to achieve the perfect symmetry maximum aesthetic appeal and maintain the functionality while delivering special eating experience. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? MD: I want this product to be visible on many high-end restaurant tables. Moreover I would like to develop this project into a commercial product therefore allowing more people enjoy its timeless design and beauty. I intend to contact manufacturers and set up a campaign aimed at bringing this product to live on a bigger scale FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? MD: 0.5 sec it just appeared in my mind spontaneously. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? MD: I just pursuit an inspiration. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? MD: I plan to release this product under my name, however I am open for any company to lease it and sell it under its brand with the conservation of my name as the designer of it. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? MD: The need for perfection in everyday life. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? MD: The original idea came to be without any initial inspirations, however after developing this project I have noticed its somewhat similarity in the aesthetical appealing perfectionism to the infamous Stark's Lemon squeezer. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? MD: People who need a useable piece of art/design in their life and who appreciate the work and devotion to the idea of aesthetics that is ever-present in this cutlery set. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? MD: There is no design in this category that would be resembling its great features as its original and based on pure stream of spontaneous inspiration. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? MD: I am considering rebranding its name. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? MD: Drawing, Inspiration, 3D modelling tools such as SolidWorks and Blender. 3D printing. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? MD: The most unique aspect of this design is its form and what it brings to virtually unchanged idea of cutlery for centuries. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? MD: No one, I have developed it on my own. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? MD: I had to use high-precision machinery and software to allow the design to be satisfyingly usable and beautiful at the same time. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? MD: I have based this design mostly on my personal experiences. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? MD: One real challenge was the process of finding the best way of manufacturing this design. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? MD: I found this design award to very accurately representing the values of originality, innovatory and ground-braking approach to design I wanted to highlight with my design. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? MD: Before this project I have never performed anything even remotely as complex and difficult to create as this project. Most of my university tutors told me it is impossible for the level of skill I had at that time yet I have made this project with a 97% accuracy of my initial visualisation for it.
