Interview with Carmelo Lupo at Friday 5th of April 2019 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? CL: The main principle idea and ispiration is to create an innovative and smart istrument that takes care of human tissue samples, unique and unrepeatable. The instrument, thanks to Virtual Intelligence can manages actively the safety of samples and pathology diapgnosis. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? CL: Create an reliable istrumnet that looks like, feel like, and works well FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? CL: Many years of work with all components of Donatello Series 2 team FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? CL: Following ispiration and design thinking principles FS: Who is the target customer for his design? CL: Pathology Laboratories FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? CL: I work in Diapath SpA, italian company, all the products are designed and developed made in italy, for this reason, following the italian brand value, the name is ispired an famous italian artist: Donatello FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? CL: First time in the history of tissue processor of anatomical pathology, that a Virtual Intelligence has been introduced in this kind of instrument FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? CL: Mechanial engineers, Software engineers, Electric engineers, Laboratory Technicians, Pathologist, Chemist, Biologist FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? CL: Protect tissue samples for diagnosis during an overnight process FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? CL: Many years of research and test to find the best configuration of the design FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? CL: because as Steve Jobs teach....in this case "the design is how it works"
