Interview with Luisa and Lilian Parrado at Thursday 26th of April 2018 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? LP: As one of our guidelines, we started this project with the reflection on how we could create a shelf that could be a harmonious part of a modular system and therefore have a delicate but strong presence in interior spaces. We also wanted the users to have a customization experience by giving them the possibility of creating their own compositions, in a way they become an essential part of the process. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? LP: It is been almost an year of development, since the beginning of its conception until it is ready for sales. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? LP: We decided to develop this concept specially because, having an architectural background, we enjoy thinking products having in mind its context in first place. Our ideas always come from the lack we feel of some specific product, and from what we feel as a necessity putting ourselves on our customers' shoes. The main goal is that the product go beyond a simple object and becomes an experience as much as transforming the place it is inserted. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? LP: It gives to the users not just an object, but a design experience that they are part of. The system was designed to be adaptable and to fit every space and necessity by giving them the possibility of creating many kinds of compositions, therefore, besides of being a unique design itself, it becomes a unique design for each person, place and situation. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? LP: Technology has a strong presence in our designs in general. For Wing Shelving System, specially for having this modular and customization concept, it was used as an essential tool to make the whole structure system have the accuracy we needed. CNC technology was the way we chose to make both materials fit together with required precision. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? LP: We always learn a lot during the prototyping step of the project. It is very common that everything goes according to expectations and seems to easily work during the designing part but it all suddenly change when we start bringing it out of the paper. Things going wrong help us to learn how to deal with adverse situations, to understand more about techniques and materials and mainly to exercise our creativity and search for new solutions.
