Interview with Joel Derksen at Wednesday 25th of April 2018 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? JD: The engagement of interior and exterior forces - which is a key inspiration for Ian Bennett's work. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? JD: Simplicity - letting the concept come forward. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? JD: I want to fuss with the type some more but - it's done. So, letting it be? FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? JD: Three to four weeks. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? JD: There was a lot of market research and looking at other architecture firms. interviews with art historians and architecture fans helped put words to some unique attributes in Ian's work. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? JD: Ian's clients - people who will want to remember him and commission him for work. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? JD: Here, I think it's about acknowledging that paper itself is a surface that can be manipulated. It can engage space around it. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? JD: Interviews with architecture fans and art historians, interviews with the client himself, and a lot of research into how architects talk about their practice. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? JD: The biggest one was the limitation of language and Ian's perspective on his own work.
