Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Christian Kroepfl (CK) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Christian Kroepfl by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design SB11 here.

Interview with Christian Kroepfl at Monday 24th of April 2017

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
CK: The SB11 originally was designed as an entertainment centre that is of course capable of storing upright vinyl records (and file folders).

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
CK: I wanted to create a multifunctional sideboard.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
CK: Sell it overseas.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
CK: In the end we worked for 1,5 years.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
CK: I tried to find a well designed sideboard that fits in the producer's series which started with the meanwhile well known table KT11.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
CK: There is one producer for the EU.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
CK: Everybody with taste and a sense of functionality who needs a sideboard.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
CK: Just look at it!

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
CK: I tried to find a well designed sideboard that fits in the producer's series which started with the meanwhile well known table KT11.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
CK: Look at those beautiful legs!

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
CK: The SB11 originally was designed as an entertainment centre that is of course capable of storing upright vinyl records, so optional features (cable management, ventilation openings, etc.) are very important.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
CK: It was the most strenuous to find a suitable opening system. I could enthuse several producers of hinges for a prototype of a hinge, but in the end I was talking about a manageable amount of opening systems and they talked constantly about 200.000+ items. Fortunately a very good solution could be found in the end.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
CK: I was asked.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
