Interview with SEBNEM BUHARA at Monday 24th of April 2017

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
SB: Artizen is not only a chandelier, it is also an expression of pure human feelings expressed through an art. It is like an sculptural design which is also be lighting for spaces. I want to create a lighting which is created to appeal to the eye like sculpture and also provide us multiple usage of the design in spaces.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
SB: Artizen has a classic chandelier form and the flexibility to change shapes. Just adjusting the lines up to the top or down it forms an different design by preference of the user. This system provide us multiple usage of the design in spaces. As a designer, I believe that an object must be useful in life, gives a feeling to be unique, and has a story.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
SB: The project started in February 2016 and finished in May 2016 in Istanbul and currently exhibition in BOU Art&Design.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
SB: Artizen is being produced and still on sale in our design shop named Bou Art&Design in Karaköy- İstanbul/ Turkey.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
SB: As an architect I always find a gap in lightning designs in all kinds of categories like modern or classic styles. In my professional designer life my priority is always working on and create timeless designs like not fitting only, unperminant fashion periods or specific time periods. In my eye, Artize fits this definition.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
SB: The design, 'Artizen', can make different people get together by free preferences, can change shape for different uses, different hights but not losing its from and basics. This opportunity gives users a freedom.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
SB: Our designs should have, small details that a qualified eye can see, masive stance that shows itself and traditional technique which cannot be copied.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
SB: The masculin materials as glass and brass compose an organic form and built by hand in this design. Brass parts are made by special handmade molds which is connecting to blowed glass parts. All glass pieces are made by hand, one by one. All these features, handmade work experimentations and time in the creation process creates the name of the design.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
SB: Artizen has a classic chandelier form and the flexibility to change shapes by just adjusting the lines up on the design. We create flexible brass lines for this feature.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
SB: 'Artizen' has different qualities adapt to the new tecnological systems which are used in lighting industry. With dimmeable led tecnology, our design is energy-saver.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
SB: Materials such as glass and brass are sculpted into an organic, natural form by the hand. This time period was tough but in the end it become a succes.Brass tubes are made by special molds created by us and connecting other glass parts. All glass bulbs are handmade. Each glass pieces had own unique size and that makes standardization difficult. We eliminated various samples to achive the right size of glass pieces in the end.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
