Interview with Karolis Bakunas at Friday 28th of April 2017

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
KB: The main design principle is simplicity in form, luxury in style and innovative in engineering. The idea was to create turntable that enables user to get involved in playing process, manually change speeds, adjust tonearm. Metal and glass combined together makes really good material matching.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
KB: I wanted to create minimal and luxury device at the same moment. I wanted it to be simple, clear and understandable. No added unnecessary thing, only pure shape and function.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
KB: My plans are to make it serial product, promote that every audio enthusiast will see and want to have it.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
KB: It took 4 months from idea to first working product.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
KB: I decided to pursuit an inspiration, because I am audio enthusiast and music fan.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
KB: This design is made together with audio company “Reed”, I hope they will make it as serial product.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
KB: I thought it would be nice to design a new turntable, I searched for company that would help me to build and produce this turntable.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
KB: David Lewis from Bang&Olufsen, Dieter Rams with Braun, Jonathan Ive from Apple.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
KB: The target customer is audiophile who needs perfection in sound, design and built quality.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
KB: The main new thing is tonearm disc, that enables user to use different length tonearms and easily adjust them. Minimal design, transparent upper part lets all the process to be seen. Even motor can be seen.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
KB: Word “Precision” means accuracy and clearness in sound and shape. Turntable is a device, that must be made and configured precisely in order to achieve the best sound quality.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
KB: Sketching, 3d modelling, prototyping.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
KB: The most unique aspect is that every function is controlled manually, that lets the user to be involved in playing process more.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
KB: Vidmantas Triukas from company “Reed” helped me with engineering and technical pert of my work.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
KB: The role of technology is very important. Motor must be very accurate, every detail of turntable must be made precisely and accurate.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
KB: I made many interviews with audio enthusiasts, engineers and potential users. Also I collected important data that helped me a lot during design.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
KB: Mainly the challenge was to create new and fresh looking turntable with added new technical solutions. For device like this it is very hard to offer something new. Also, production of parts was quite difficult, because everything had to be very accurate. Setting all the geometry was also difficult.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
KB: I feel that my design is good, and I wanted to show it for more people, I want it to be more popular.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
KB: I learned a lot about turntable geometry, about turntable history and new tendencies, about working principle.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
KB: I enjoyed creating this turntable!

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
