Interview with Jacqueline Mengi at Sunday 26th of February 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? JM: The inspiration of this design was flames. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? JM: I wanted to create a lamp which will also serve as an art piece when not lit. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? JM: I would want to see this design being an iconic piece that people buy and keep loving for many years! FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? JM: This design concept took maybe a month or two to finalize the concept. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? JM: I was creating a furniture line and I wanted to include lighting pieces as part of my exhibition. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? JM: This design is produced by my company. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? JM: I wanted to create a unique lighting piece. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? JM: Yes,because I was designing other furniture pieces which were mostly inspired by nature they helped in influencing this particular design. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? JM: People who are looking for something beautiful and different. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? JM: It is hand made and the material used is an exotic hard wood called "mninga" found in Tanzania. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? JM: One of the challenges was to figure out how to create the flame effect,having to decide on the exact measurements that would be suitable and finally how those pieces were going to be assembled. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? JM: I thought that this piece is unique and it would fit in this particular competition.
