Interview with Robin Greene at Sunday 23rd of April 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? RG: The artwork needed to fuse several concepts. The hedonistic & gambling aspect of Las Vegas, the hotel’s digital art philosophy & the luxury interiors of the villa. Using dice to create an artwork gave the opportunity to reflect Vegas & digital art simultaneously. Using Roy Lichtenstein as an inspiration for the style of art sat perfectly with the dots on the dice. The polished nickel-plated frames & thick reflective perspex panels sat perfectly with the luxury colour scheme by interior designers Richmond International. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? RG: The aesthetic of this artwork needed to fit in with The Cosmopolitan Hotel’s promotion of digital art and depicts a pixilated image, made up from 3,470 casino grade dice. As many of the dice are either custom-made without dots, or semi-transparent, the artwork changes appearance from day to night, making full use of its position by one of the floor to ceiling windows. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? RG: To promote my company as a design studio that can create and produce beautiful creative art installations for the interior, hospitality, residential and corporate markets. The design will be part of a wider portfolio of work aimed at the high-end design market. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? RG: The project took nearly 5 months total to complete. Concept to finished artwork 1 month. Design development to approval 1 month. Casino manufacturers 1.5 month. Production 1.5 months. The artwork was installed into The Cosmopolitan Hotel Las Vegas in December 2016. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? RG: I was commissioned by the interior design firm Richmond International to create an art installation for the Cosmopolitan Hotel. Each art installation I am commissioned to create starts with a new brief specific to the client. The use of casino dice was relevant because of the specific brief for this specific client. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? RG: It was designed for the exclusive use of the hotel. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? RG: The visual content of the artwork was loosely inspired by the work of Roy Lichtenstein. The pop art nature of the work fit the culture of an American city like Vegas, and the aesthetic of using dots in his paintings, perfectly lent itself to the aesthetic of the dots on the dice. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? RG: High-end customers who would stay in prestigious international hotels, and world class interior design firms. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? RG: Ss far as I know, there isn't another artwork similar to this one! This is due in part because the artwork was designed specifically for the hotel space, hotel philosophy and location of Las Vegas. All these elements have combined to create something unique. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? RG: Whether you are playing for money, love or work, Vegas reflects the fragile nature of life. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? RG: CAD, laser cutting, welding, polishing, acrylic manufacturing, nickel plating FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? RG: Many of the casino quality dice were custom made to exclude the dots. The artwork was also mounted to a base rather than hung on a wall. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? RG: I worked with a company called JLK in London to engineer the framing, presentational design and installation of the artwork. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? RG: To perfectly fit all the elements and different fabrications together seamlessly. Also CAD was essential to plan out the dice to make up the artwork. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? RG: Many visual references reflecting the history of Vegas were researched to find the right concept for the artwork. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? RG: The first challenge was creating a concept approved by both the interior design firm & the hotel. The second challenge was designing an artwork that worked with dice, a completely new & unchartered format. The third challenge was making sure the installation worked against a window, & how light would play a factor for the artwork. Lastly, installing the artwork in a hotel, in a foreign country, meant ensuring all aspects of the artwork covered safety issues from materials to installation. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? RG: I believed that the design deserved recognition for its unique and creative properties. I want to also promote my studio internationally . FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? RG: I have developed a better understanding of a wide use of materials and construction techniques
