Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Luyi Sun (LS) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Luyi Sun by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Ocd here.

Interview with Luyi Sun at Wednesday 12th of April 2017

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
LS: This piece is inspired by Neil Hilborn's poem "OCD."

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
LS: The balance between geometric and organic shapes.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
LS: Making more variations of this piece and experiment with differrent materials.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
LS: It took me about 2 weeks.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
LS: I was deeply touched when I read Neil Hilborn's poem in a literature class and it spoke to me emotionally, so I decided to make a piece out of it.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
LS: I made this piece myself, but I would love to work with a company and create more variations of this piece, such as rings, necklaces and earrings.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
LS: I love making brooches, they sit close to your heart and make a statement.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
LS: I'm really interested in architecture designs and I always incorporate geometric shapes in my design.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
LS: Its handmade quality, unique texture and movability.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
LS: It's from Neil Hilborn's poem "OCD."

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
LS: I just did rough sketch on my note book and that's it, most of my design grew organically during the process of making.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
LS: The piece looks fragile but it is actually very sturdy, the movability and texture makes it visually interesting.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
LS: I completed the work all by myself.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
LS: This piece is all handmade, using very traditional techniques.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
LS: I did my research on OCD, and noticed that most of them have the need for symmetry and like to align things in perfectly order, and that's the reason I chose squares to represent that.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
LS: Interpret the poem in an abstract way.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
LS: I think one of brooch's function is being noticed and to start a conversation, I'm curious how many people out there will resonate with this piece.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
LS: Do not rush during the making, good results take time and patience.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
LS: No.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
