Interview with Alice Tedesco at Wednesday 3rd of May 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? AT: This is a furniture inspired by the the physical surroundings, made to become part of it. To show what’s behind or upon you. So, if you are at the beach, drinking your cocktail, you don’t have to choose between drinking comfortably or seeing the stars because Sframe allows both. It releases a warm low light and doesn’t affect the landscape, it’s made to complement it. Your steps are safe and you can use it as a stool where finish your drink. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? AT: Sframe is designed to avoid the light pollution typical of the outdoor food activities of the Sicilian, but not only, coast. During the summer, bars and cafes fill the sea’s edge of most of the public coast. Most of this structures are precarious and not all of the design’s aspects are well calculated; light design is one of the less studied. The easier consequence of this under estimation are higher level of light pollution. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? AT: To lease the productions rights. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? AT: I was looking for a simple object capable to solve several problems, from lighting to furnishing a space with less resources, to be reproduced by hand or industrially. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? AT: Transactional target, for ages and uses. From outdoor to indoor, most effective in public space, can be used also as a living (living-room) side table.. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? AT: “Sframe” comes mixing the words “section” and “frame”. Due to a technical perspective, the product is made by a frame section // sectioning - cutting in half a stainless steel frame. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? AT: The emptiness of volumes. Simplicity and functionality in a naked shape, less materials to get more functions. Sframe work as a furniture system, easily custom with any color of material and light effects. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? AT: Yes, this is a team work. I involved an electrician and a local blacksmith to prototype and better define some technical details. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? AT: I conducted a field research to understand the most common solutions and errors that other competitors had. This gave me the first input for the product’s concept, improved by market and material / technological studies and prototyping.
