Interview with Yoshitaka Uchino at Monday 24th of April 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? YU: Not only renovate the spaces of the Misora Kindergarten but also reincarnete them as a new one is the main principle. Works by Carlo Scarpa including Castel Vecchio inspires me most. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? YU: To make the kindergarten strong is the most important theme,however we aimed to reincarnate spaces by introducing outside spaces such as the sky and the greenery into them. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? YU: Based upon the principle with which we designed this project,we will reincarnate spaces of cultural buildings,houses,housings. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? YU: About five months. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? YU: Under strict regulations of the schedule and the cost,we pursue to create a totally new space by renovating the buildings. Taking care of the kids of the kindergarten while we are having talks with vice president,the idea of the color of the sky and the greenery came up with me. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? YU: No.I don't have plans. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? YU: To have relationship with the nature is one of the important idea for us.To create nature in the old building,we strive to create spaces where one will feel the nature. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? YU: Works by Tadao Ando really influences my concept for architecture.His insightful attitude towards architecture,for example taking care for the light,wind,and rain inspires me. How Japanese traditional architecture including Katsura Imperial Villa mingles with nature also inspires me. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? YU: The owners of cultural buildings,especially kindergartens,schools. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? YU: Balancing the structural design and architectural design. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? YU: This is the name of the kindergarten. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? YU: For cad,Vectorworks and FormZ. I mainly rely on sketches and models for deciding designs. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? YU: Creating spaces where one will feel the nature with spaces of squares and path.Considering the behaviors of people,I study and design spaces. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? YU: Insightful structural engineers. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? YU: To strengthen the structure,technology and analysis are the main purpose. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? YU: No research influenced the design. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? YU: Under tight schedule,we managed to realize the design which aims both seismic strengthening the building and making comfortable spaces for kids. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? YU: To be evaluated for the design in an international scope. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? YU: Traveling and visiting great architectures and traditional architectures and villages.
