Interview with Sanjay Newaskar Designs LLP at Thursday 11th of May 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? SN: The basic concept is folded planes and partitions. We wanted our furniture to give a feel like origami. We have taken inspiration from Plasma studio and Architect Daniel Libeskind for this concept. Accordingly, we have designed false ceiling in different angles in some rooms and passages and folded partitions. Floating trapezoid panels and shades of white, create a sculptural effect. The walls are fragmented into a series of panels accentuated by reflected light that renders it as a sculptural backdrop. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? SN: We have kept lots of openings in the pent house, because of which natural sunlight can travel inside the house for the whole day. There is no need to use the artificial lighting until the sun sets down. Due to the openings, there is a nice cross ventilation throughout the day and also a nice breeze runs in the whole pent house, which ultimately saves a lot of electricity. The pent house being East-West Facing, the sunrise can we seen from the living room and sunset can be seen from Bedrooms. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? SN: Want to win more and more Awards for this Award winning project. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? SN: Around 18 months FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? SN: The basic concept is folded planes and partitions. We wanted our furniture to give a feel like origami. We have taken inspiration from Plasma studio and Architect Daniel Libeskind for this concept. Accordingly, we have designed false ceiling in different angles in some rooms and passages and folded partitions. Floating trapezoid panels and shades of white, create a sculptural effect. The pent house being East-West Facing, the sunrise can we seen from the living room and sunset can be seen from Bedrooms. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? SN: No. I would intent to produce my work by myself. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? SN: The Pent House is located in the heart of Pune City in a well known Housing Society and locality on the 11th floor, 12th floor and 13th floor. The house is designed in a way that the 11th floor consists of all Common areas like Entrance lobby, Kids play area at the right hand side, Guest room at the left hand side and Staircase on the right hand side going to the above floor, Double height Living room, Kitchen towards the left side of the Living room, Dining area with an adjoining natural Greenwall which gives a pleasant feel even from the entrance lobby and living room. Dining area is located in between two terraces (terrace from the kitchen area and Living room Terrace). 12th floor consists of all the private areas like Master bedroom, Kids bedroom, and library cum study area. 13th floor, Top terrace is recreation area and entertainment zone which consists of a closed pool table area and an open terrace for parties, or family get together towards the right hand side and a Home theatre towards the left hand side attached with a pantry and common toilet. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? SN: We have kept lots of openings in the pent house, because of which natural sunlight can travel inside the house for the whole day. There is no need to use the artificial lighting until the sun sets down. Due to the openings, there is a nice cross ventilation throughout the day and also a nice breeze runs in the whole pent house, which ultimately saves a lot of electricity. The pent house being East-West Facing, the sunrise can we seen from the living room and sunset can be seen from Bedrooms. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? SN: The design of the pent house is first and foremost ‘an attempt to play with a non-orthogonal geometry’, an exercise involving volumes and sections that arise out of a response to the sun path, shade and wind. The result is an innovative form, with a roof that descends and envelops the house, in the process becoming both a wall and a sun shading device. The angled roof wraps over the dwelling and falls in the manner of a vein or headscarf, partially obscuring the interior of the house from its neighbors. The design process is largely intuitive, interlocking double volumes have been created internally, light is captured, and the angled false ceilings encourage the flow of the prevailing breezes. Entering the house through a single-height lobby and proceeding past the guest suite, kitchen and dining areas, there is a dramatic expansion into a soaring double-height living room overlooking the living room with attached terrace. Horizontal wooden louvres on the east elevation create an intriguing pattern of shadows within the living spaces. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? SN: The Pent House is located in a scheme where already 4 pent houses are designed by us. All those pent house's had the same plan, hence we had to design a different house altogether. This was the main challenge. We accepted it and incorporated a new concept with the help of Origami & light and shadows theme.
