Interview with Dave Coomans and Gaudi Hoedaya at Monday 16th of May 2016

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
GH: Experimenting with material, technology and forms are literally the basics. Turning material into form using the limitations of the machine that is producing it. We experiment with forms by defining it and let the machine makes it and react on the outcome and manipulate it so that the ideal form occurs.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
GH: Material, production method, purpose and idea has to be in line and supports and strengthen one another

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
GH: We want to launch a crowd funding for the 3D clay printer. Alongside we want to present designs that has been made with the printer. We are looking for ways to produce the design and make it available for public to acquire it

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
GH: We have been working on our machine for more than a year and we had each elements for weeks already but it was that one decisive hour when we sat together and the idea was born and all came together in this particular concept.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
GH: This design is made possible because we are building the machine that can print clay. So first there is the machine. To demonstrate the possibilities we create some designs. The limitations in it printing height dictates us to put parts on top of each other to reach the desired heights and so the idea was born.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
GH: The design can be made by another company but since we are the creator/ owner of the machine it is also within our reach to produce it ourselves.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
GH: Since we work with clay, designing a vase feels so natural.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
GH: Printing with clay is still a niche, we have seen colleagues working with different methods with beautiful results. The fact that there are people also printing with clay helps motivates us to continue developing our own method.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
GH: People who loves flowers and good designed objects

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
GH: The beauty lies in the clear and simple origins of the elements: the simplicity of the material, the innovative production method and the functions which all help sustain the concept. In return, the concept holds together its origin. It became a closed circle - or better, a spiral since we can build further upon this concept.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
GH: We name our startup xprmnt, an abbreviation of experiment. That is how we work and how we came to this design.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
GH: We think and we make, using any possible tools whether it is a hammer, computers and software or material.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
GH: The combination of the form, function and production method.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
GH: We learned a lot from the 3D community, friends who worked with clay and software guru's who helped us solve problems we encounter along the way.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
GH: It is essential.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
GH: A lot of time has been put into the development of the machine. There are a lot of parameters involved before we get the clay out of the machine and get the printer print the desired design.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
GH: Building the machine, calibrate it, knowing its limits, turn it into strength and make it work

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
GH: I was made aware of A'Design Award and it seems a respected and acknowledge award.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
GH: If you work together, better design will arise.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
GH: Thank you, the questionaire has been thorough

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
