Interview with Miroslav Stiburek at Tuesday 19th of April 2016

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
MS: Bringing the classic and traditional look of a watch back to the market through targeting teenagers. This is achieved by using many colour combinations. The presented design is white leather strap with pure stainless steel watch. We either colour the strap and the watch, or just the strap, making the watch fun to wear and combine with other fashion gear.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
MS: Purity.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
MS: Bringing it onto the market.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
MS: 6 months.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
MS: Actually this was my first industrial design piece, and it was more an act of self-realisation. I was in fashion, I had my own fashion boutique, but I was not fulfilled, and I basically out of nothing decided to design a watch and realised that I'm pretty good at this.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
MS: I'm still evaluating options.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
MS: An act of intution.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
MS: No.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
MS: Teenagers, or people who want something simple, elegant yet fun to wear.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
MS: Purity and colourfulness. These images don't show the coloured version, but in total I have 8 other colours.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
MS: The goal I was so desperately after was to pass onto fellow ladies and gentlemen the feelings we all desire, the irreplacable feelings of confidence, love, sexiness and uniqueness. After roughly 50 hours of brainstorming, introspection, connecting and abstraction, I came up with two words that characterised exactly the products and feelings I would like to produce and evoke - the words slick and sexy. After splattering these two words onto a chalkboard, I started drawing some logotypes and I was pretty happy with the name slick&sexy, but after a while I felt this inner dissatisfaction and figured that something was missing. I eventually started realising its needless length and descriptive nature. I wanted an original and a suggestive brand name. It finally hit me, when I started shuffling these two names in reverse SLICK-SEXY, SEXY-SLICK. And finally SLIXY, a new word came out of it and I had what I wanted and could pursue my vision.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
MS: Pen and paper. Photoshop.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
MS: The simple rounded look with the slightly arced side.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
MS: Yes, the manufacturer helped me with engineering.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
MS: I usually conduct social research, so I think about the people using it, their needs and wants.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
MS: I placed high emphasis on details and willingness to not stop until I produce something marketable. This was something my manufacturer was struggling with, as I never stopped improving it and they would have stopped long before I was done with. Either way, a product is never fully finished, as I had realised that a couple of years later I will have had a different perspective as my mind changes every day.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
MS: I felt that this was a good experience and a chance to gain more insight into the world of design and see what the design world is like, as I'm new to industrial design.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
MS: Dramatically.
