Polka Corporate Identity by Yuta Takahashi

Home > Winners > Design #46353 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Yuta Takahashi (YT) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Yuta Takahashi by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Polka here.

Interview with Yuta Takahashi at Wednesday 20th of April 2016

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
YT: Simple and minimal. Clean modern design. The features of our work are minimal designs which grasp the essence of materials and remove unnecessary elements. Our goal is sustainable design, staying socially conscious and aiming for cultural growth. We solidify the identities of brands and companies by crafting polished, modern and valuable visual identities.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
YT: We established Polka's refined, urban impression through the logotype, and represented the cuteness and curiosity of young women (the main user demographic) through an original dot pattern. There may seem to be a small divide between the keywords of "cuteness and urbanity" and "fun and refinement", but we thought it was possible to craft an original identity by cleverly mixing those things together.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
YT: By used of polka dot that is the origin of the name of Polka, we produced the logotype that is full of modernity and joy. Then, by extracting the dots, we designed the original pattern of random arrangement of large and small four dots. It expresses the interests, pioneering spirit, passions, funs, the claims of individuality of Polka.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
YT: We demand a strict mathematical approach when it comes to design. This makes it possible to replicate our designs, with no need for designers to put their personal input into the piece, and no part of the design coming to fruition by chance. Our designs are managed mathematically, making it possible for them to be replicated whenever, wherever.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
YT: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
YT: In addition to relevant business conditions, we have also begun a wide-ranging and random investigation of user images and impressions, or feelings, of various businesses. We have clarified positions of existing companies and brands from marketplace experience, and have researched what kind of visual language is considered necessary for Polka based on these foundations.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
