Interview with Tiago Curioni at Tuesday 26th of April 2016

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
TC: My idea was to create something which mix art and design using a noble material which reveals purity and lightness. It should be able to use inside or outside and it should be easy to molde.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
TC: I wanted to develop something which has an elegant, clean and pure design and that could be used in a gallery or even in a garden. The material should promote this freedom of use.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
TC: I want to promote this design, because I trully beleave on it. Also, want to the international market know my design and techniques. For this, I intend to make contacts with galleries around the world which can help me to disclose it

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
TC: From the first sketch to the first piece, around 2 years. I made the first sketches a long time ago, returning for a hiking in the montais around my farm, in Brazil. I imagined a bench in the top of a montain, resting like a Bird. I tried to use many materials, until I´ve fond the Staron, by Samsung. The material have a good usability and it´s easy to molded with the heat. The choise was made.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
TC: It was a friend who introduced me to the material and at the same moment I thoght to use to build the Angel. I also met a small workshop in Brazil, which Works with Staron and they help me to finish my work.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
TC: The Angel is produced and sale by me and Nicoli Gallery (main gallery located in Sao Paulo). However, I am open to discuss alternative proposals about production rights and different materials.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
TC: My work is always looking for different and particular ways to use traditional furniture. The Angel had to be the unique.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
TC: My inspirations are architects and designers who can show brazilian talent like no one could ever imagine. I can say Oscar Niemeyer, Jader Almeida ans Sérgio Rodriges.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
TC: Design collectors, museums, hotels, big companies and galleries in general.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
TC: The Angel bench is unique, every single corner is different and never an Angel bench will be equal to other. They are all handmade even the wings curves.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
TC: It has wings, it´s white and the meterial in noble. Angel was obvious to me at the moment.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
TC: I always start drawing by hand. It´s essencial. Than I used autoCAD to take details and construction dimensions.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
TC: The lighness and minimal trace.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
TC: Staron by Samsung offer me the material and Premmium design workshop helped me to build. Both in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
TC: Almost none , except for detailing some points. The rest is all handmade with saw, sanding machine and a huge oven to make the curves.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
TC: Like the design came from an inspiration, research was given to the field of materials that could be used.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
TC: The material is fragile if not support by a metal structure which exist only at the seat area. The wings don´t have this reinforcement.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
TC: I have some designers friends who won the prize in other years and I always wanted to participate. The Angel feels the right oppontunity.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
TC: I learned that you don´t make design without a good network. You will need a huge number of people to make things happen.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
TC: I am pleased to participate from A´design Award and I hope to participate next year again.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
