Interview with MonkeyGlasses Mai-britt B.Seaton at Sunday 21st of February 2016

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
MM: Developing a concept that combines respect for people and the environment while also being affordable was essential to to us right from the start.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
MM: Being the first sustainable eyewear brand.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
MM: We will expand with more series that have theme in sustainable and recycling of waste materials. We hope to cooperate with other companies from other industries, we have begun this journey. A normination as A'Design Awards will enhance our misson and have great significance for our future.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
MM: It took us 10 months two make our name, the vision and the DNA of our brand. We started in 2009.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
MM: My husband Morten have been in the eyewear business since he was 22. I came from the cloth industry, and have been working with construction, design and production. We wanted to make a difference in the eyewear. Not only for our self (because we had both our own companies) but we saw that there was something that the eyewear business total missed. It was a sustainable eyewear brand.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
MM: We intend to go on our self for many years ahead.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
MM: The eyewear business total missed sustanability.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
MM: No

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
MM: from the mid 20's and up.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
MM: We dont saw any other brands paying attention for the envoiment. It took me 2½ year to find casses for the glasses. We started with bio cotton pouch only.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
MM: Our name is from a Danish play on the word “brilleabe”, which when translated becomes "monkeyglasses®". We also felt that the similar sounding expression “travelling in monkey-class" fits our vision of having an affordable product. Our products should be affordable.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
MM: Adobe programs.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
MM: That we have the envoimently thinking put in to everything and that we support Save the orangutan.org

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
MM: Only us.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
MM: We reuse left over materials, we find solutions that will fit in for the people that work for us. we often have to pay more to get the right standards.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
MM: No/yes plenty of our own analytical. About 6-8 students is haveing thir internship in our company every year. Here we develope and reserch on going.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
MM: That we do not find the industri ready to our demands. We will keep asking and explorer new ideas.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
MM: Becaue you sent me an invitation in an email. Thank you, we hope that we will have a positive feed back. (o:

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
MM: That you have a very thorough and well developed application form. (o:
