Interview with Chris Slabber at Wednesday 26th of February 2014

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
CS: I think to communicate Haezer's sound, personality and philosophy on a visual level.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
CS: Well as with most projects I always want to one up my technique from the previous one. Its important to me to keep pushing my own boundaries and challenging my own insights to what I'm capable of. And also to please the client as always.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
CS: Show it to the world and make some new ones.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
CS: I'd say it was about a month's work in terms of conceptualising and execution.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
CS: After going through a lot, and I mean a lot of ideas in my head and with the client this one was the one that always kept standing out from the rest.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
CS: Its being produced by Haezer's record label called Tasty Records.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
CS: Its a style and technique I'm very familiar with. I like to mix photography with digital art/manipulation. The results are always interesting.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
CS: I do always create what I call a "Style File". This is comprised of anything cool I find on google or behance or anything like that. So yes I always get inspired by the work thats out there.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
CS: His fan base which I'd say is about 16 - 25, male and female urban city dwellers.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
CS: I created every single thing from scratch. I think it was a very hands on approach which I find always makes for a better end result.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
CS: Well the name Is Gold Plated Frequencies, which was Haezer's idea, so thats all him.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
CS: photography, sfx makeup and adobe photoshop

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
CS: I think the fine line between the human and sculpture effects. It seems alive, but not quite.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
CS: I worked with a photographer friend Adriaan Louw. He's super talented and has really been making a name for himself as well as makeup artist Jeanne- Marie Raubenheimer.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
CS: a big one, but technology means nothing it you can't control it.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
CS: Just plain old style referencing and inspirational material.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
CS: The biggest one was making it seem believable. I want people to look at it and question their own beliefs of what is real and fictional.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
CS: A friend send me the link and after checking it out I thought I should take a chance.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
CS: not to doubt my imagination and gut instincts.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
CS: Thanks to my dad for borrowing me money to enter!

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
