Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer smallna (PP) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of smallna by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Risky Shop here.

Interview with smallna at Sunday 20th of July 2014

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
PP: the idea of the showroom was to express the name of the brand: risk. That is why it is considered as up side down, with the impression that something is not normal, against teh rules. it is switched like the collection of clothes created by Klara and Antonina. They combain fashion and comfort. Grey melange suit with hoodie is common for their style. Girls differ one from the other but plays well together. It is reflected in the baloon installation that we created with my friend - Joanna Gwozdz. Baloons work against gravity and fly different directions like the girls owing risk.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
PP: We did not have much space for showing all the ideas in 80sq m apartment in tenement house. We wanted to show the story standing behind brands. We wandered hoe to display hundred models and have open space in the same time. That is why we used both the ceiling and floor for exhibition. Room on the ceileing shows this unexpected story. Some lady just left the skirt on the ceiling and fits other one behind the curtain. System of pipe racks plays both the directions and pants hang up side down against gravity as well. Crazy clothes are lightened by pure vintage and rare pieces of lamps from smallna collection. It is a combination of soft and raw. I focused on symbolic but very relistic impression and finding room for two different worlds. It is like risk with comfy clothes lightened by smallna rusty lighting, against the rules, even against the gravity.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
PP: Future plans for this award is to not leave it alone, to get another one for another risk & smallna showroom. Actually we managed to do ity with mobile pop up shop that is also awarded in different category: Multidisciplinary and Interdisciplinary Design. We really appreciate it. We love creating cool ideas either in designing clothes or exhibiting them in differtent way. Every day, different model, one from 230 available. And now axactly on eyear after opening risky shop we manage to open anothe showroom of risk by smallna. I hope it will be even more appreciated than first one.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
PP: Creating interior took two months but gathering items, pure vintage pieces of lighting and furniture took many years, some of them are really rare and it is hard to find such pieces even in other vintage galleries.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
PP: I do not like standard ideas and smallna design studio specializes in creating extraordinary solutions. I found the client / partner who allows for everything giving green light for the most risky ideas, we both have it in roots. That is why the synergy of this project is so strong and we extend our collaboration, making more and more crazy things together. We act on different markets with different activities like fashion, art, design, exhibitions, happenings, it is really challenging and fruitfull for both the brands.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
PP: Ideas are dedicated strictly to risk made in warsaw and our coillaboration. It works as synergy of the independent brands and companies that go well together as well.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
