Interview with May Khoury at Monday 21st of April 2014

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
MK: My inspiration for this design came from the wooden old pieces used for agriculture, whereby they are upcycled to form a beautiful modern creation.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
MK: I wanted to revive an old piece & narrate its story.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
MK: I would like to show it in as many Art Fairs & Exhibitions in Jordan & outside.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
MK: It took me one month to finalize the design & technique

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
MK: I just decided to persue an inspiration without anyone comissioning me to do so.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
MK: I intend to produce my work myself

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
MK: I always choose old deserted pieces & try to give them a new life.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
MK: I had designed myself earlier other pieces using the same material, but was not influenced by any other designer.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
MK: Art lovers & creative people who appreciate nature & new ideas.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
MK: It is a new design & turned out to be a very original one.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
MK: The name of the design explains it. Qadem is the wooden saddle back used for mules to transport wheat from one village to another. The green painted hooks are used with the qadem to keep the wheat intact in its place.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
MK: I just formulate the design, put it on paper & explain it to the carpenter who produces it

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
MK: The unique aspect of my design is giving birth to pieces of wood that are forgotten & left in our farms. pieces of wood that tell a story of an era & a society forgotten by our new generation.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
MK: I just worked with the artisan carpenter who produces my designs

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
MK: There is no role of new technology in this design

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
MK: My designs are all simple besigns with no research behind them. there is a mission behind them & thats reviving our old crafts.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
MK: It was quite an effort to design a piece of furniture using certain old materials as is. I didn't cut any wood & tried to work with the pieces available. I also avoided using any metal screw or nails to connect or attach the pieces together.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
MK: I had participated few months back in this competition & liked the idea so I decided to participate again.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
MK: I always try to do a better job than the one before & I give my work & design a lot of thought, vision & mission.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
MK: No thanks to A Design Award for giving me this opportunity to promote my creations & confirm my status as a creative Jordanian designer.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
