Interview with rolf. at Monday 11th of March 2013 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? CW: We never wanted to imitate any manufacturer or their products we want to be unique in the field of eyewear production. All of us grew up in the Tyrolean Alps, we love the beauty of the countryside and the unlimited possibilities for enjoying nature. The Alps recharge the body and soul and are an endless source of inspiration for our work. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? CW: Obsessed to work with natural materials, to increase the products quality and invest a lot of time in research and technical innovation, we intend to produce the perfect eyewear regarding durability, comfort and look. Due to the perfect symbiosis of in-house production and R&D Department and high-quality craftsmanship, we are enabled to work unlimited. Connected this tools are the key for new styles and product lines. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? CW: We are selling our product to selected optical store around the globe. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? CW: It has always been my dream to have the possibility to realize own ideas. Until yet a part of it comes true... FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? CW: All the founders are influencing the product - teh design is only one part of it. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? CW: Fashion people who like to spent money for a honest product. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? CW: 1. Innovative technical features paired with natural materials and expressive design. Our glazing system makes it possible to fix the lenses quick and easy and allows even to make thin frames. 2. No compromises regarding functionality and quality or other materials. The wooden hinge completes the concept of eyewear without screws and metal parts. ROLF Spectacles loves to work with details and the aim is to produce a piece of craftsmanship. 3. Ongoing processing - We create the next level of wooden eyewear. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? CW: Its solid features and hints of curves make the „CAMARO SUN“ stand out as cute and bold. Called the Pony Cars in the US for their compact yet muscle features, the Chevy Camaro became a success in the muscle car industry. The „CAMARO SUN“ frame resonate the quarter-mile power that the solid Camaro could pack. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? CW: looking for a nice vintage car - take a pen - draw - open the computer - produce the technical drawing - but the programs on our CNC - mill it - look at it - talk to the other ROLF - release it! FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? CW: No, everthing we do in-house. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? CW: 3-D high end milling and hand-finishing FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? CW: As a young company its hard to afford big marketing campaigns - so awards a good platform to promote our products.
