FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
TM: There is one phenomenon that continually arrests our behavior, stopping us dead in our tracks. The astrological phenomenon of a solar eclipse has intrigued people from the earliest ages of humanity. From the sudden darkening of the sky and blotting out of the Sun has cast a long shadow of fear, suspicion, and wonder on the imaginations The stunning nature of solar eclipses leaves a lasting impression upon us all. The 18K white gold diamond eclipse hoop earrings were inspired by the 2012 solar eclipse. The design tries to capture the mysterious nature and beauty of the sun and the moon The eye catching design of the Eclipse hoop earrings is the result of the synchronicity of the mirror image. The pure perfection of the simplicity of the beautiful lines, as of the silhouette of the sun and the moon lined with the brilliant shin of the diamonds which with the use of Black diamond’s to bring in the darkness and the its balanced with the use of organic and geometric shapes without sacrificing the beauty and mystery of the solar eclipse. The design emulating the mysterious halo present during an eclipse. The design adds something more elegant to a classic inspired form.
FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
TM: My main focus with this design was to try to capture a eclipse something majestic in a 3D object that can be worn on the body
FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
TM: Would like to sell the royalty rights for high-end specialty stores.
FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
TM: It took me 2-3 days just to get the design for the earrings, creating them took longer while trying to make them perfect just like a eclipse is.
FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
TM: Decided to pursue an inspiration of the 2012 eclipse that i watched.
FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
TM: The plan is to sell or lease the production rights.
FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
TM: I wanted something unique for the competition and drew from my background in style and though i should try to share what i witnessed with someone else, in the way i knew how, Jewelry
FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
TM: No
FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
TM: My Target customer for this design is women and fashion shows
FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
TM: It's unique in design and futuristic vision of style, as well as the symmetry and overlapping lines just like a eclipse creates
FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
TM: The earring are named Eclipse because that's what the inspiration was for them.
FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
TM: CAD technology
FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
TM: No one.
FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
TM: The role of technology was the use of design and CAD for the three dimensional aspect.
FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
TM: No, it was inspired by the nature and visual observation of the 2012 Eclipse
FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
TM: The biggest challenge was how to recreate what was happening in the sky to a the design in a computer as a model and to actually try to capture that same beauty between the light and the darkness. The design had to be created in a way that the casting would be able to build the whole earring in parts and still maintain the integrity of the unique structure and shape. Cleaning and polishing the parts is time consuming and requires care since it will be showing, but well worth the effort. After the parts are completed, a laser welder is used in the next phase. The utmost care is needed in order not to damage the previous steps of the work already done. From whatever angle one looks at the earrings, the earrings appears as if it were a different design, that is one of the elements that make these earrings unique.
FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
TM: I was a gold winner in last years competition so with some research i thought that the most highly considered competitions for international accessibility and distribution wouldn't be a bad think to try my luck at one more time.
FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
TM: My skills become more sharpened as I created more technically difficult designs. This hoop earrings ware a challenge because of the what I wanted to achieve, and that was the mixture of the light and darkness of the eclipse
