Interview with Arnau Bosch Vergés at Saturday 23rd of February 2013

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
AB: I knew from the beginning that we wanted to create a business card that people would like to keep and even show to others, but never forgetting the purpose of a business card.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
AB: Alicia wanted to have an original and unique business card that would make people talk. What I wanted to achieve with this design is a business card that reflects, in any single aspect, the pureness of the photography. People understand what Alicia does without even reading the text.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
AB: Keep doing good work. Working in an environment that allows me to do great work. Finding the right clients and working with the right people.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
AB: It was a week of research and a week of design development. There are some ideas that just poped in your mind and you see they work. Then you just need to find the right production to make it possible.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
AB: It was commissioned but at the same time I love art and photography and is a source of inspiration that I usually use.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
AB: It is already produced and used by Alicia Rius Photography.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
AB: Business cards is an advertising media that I always wanted to challenge myself with. It is a small piece of communication that the receivers don't really pay much attention to it, and you need to say a lot.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
AB: I always appreciate the simplicity of a useful design. Those that really achieve their goal with the most simple, understandable and easy way possible.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
AB: Photographers, film makers and everyone related to media industry.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
AB: It's a self explanatory design. People understand what Alicia does without even reading the text.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
AB: Hand drawing sketches and Photoshop design.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
AB: It's a business card that reflects, in any single aspect, the pureness of the photography.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
AB: I work together with the client Alicia Rius on the production phase.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
AB: We did some research about photographers' business cards and we realized we needed something that had to stand out.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
AB: The hardest part was to do something different that had never been done before and wouldn't leave anyone indifferent. Business cards usually get lost or end up in a trash. We knew from the beginning that we wanted to create a business card that people would like to keep and even show to others. Once I had the idea, the production was the next challenge. Alicia put the design in Photoshop and converted the living room in a dark room. Since the letters of the design are a bit blurred on purpose, it was a bit difficult to know when the design was in focus with the analog camera. On top of that, being in the dark it was hard to know if the frame was centered and we had to wait to develop the first roll to see the results. We did some tests until it was perfect.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
AB: I stumbled into some design winners from the last year's competition and I realized that there was a category that fitted perfect for my design.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
AB: That sometimes you stumble upon the right idea for the right client working with the right people, and everything becomes easy and simple.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
