Interview with Jeremy Goode at Thursday 26th of April 2012 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? JG: To design an interesting 'curious' object. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? JG: To get more distributors in more countries and to expand the range. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? JG: I designed the concept in 1999 and it sat in a box until I managed to get it manufactured. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? JG: Produced solely by Xmatrix. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? JG: An interest in puzzles, graphic and packaging design. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? JG: Women buying for men. Young male. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? JG: Most puzzles look like cheap toys. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? JG: The playful Xmatrix brand name creates its own intrigue. This unique and magical ambigram logo is itself a puzzle. It has been developed to fit onto the product and the packaging so that it always reads correctly and plays on the idea of turning the puzzle 'upside-down'. X -marks the spot, the point of buried treasure, or unknown factor, MATRIX -womb, cavity in which something is formed or developed, or an array of elements set out in rows and columns. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? JG: Hand designed and hand made mock-ups. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? JG: Worked with 3D tool makers. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? JG: Designing the tooling. Designing the logo and packaging. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? JG: I wanted the product to be appreciated from a design perspective. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? JG: Learned about the complex process of injection mould making.
