Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Qiuyu Li (QL) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Qiuyu Li by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Hearing Extraordinary Dream here.

Interview with Qiuyu Li at Wednesday 1st of May 2024

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
QL: The origin of Chinese characters can be traced back to pictographic characters, which often retain their pictorial features in their forms. This logo design of a music-related company, the design concept revolved around "sound" and "audio sources." The design elements were crafted using visual elements symbolizing "ear" and "sound waves."This inspiration from the origin of Chinese characters brings a unique and culturally meaningful visual expression to the logo, combining the rich history of Chinese characters with the music industry.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
QL: In general, company logos need to be easy to read, but for this logo, we took a bold approach by sacrificing the legibility of the characters to appeal to the aesthetic and cultural aspects of kanji. To convince the client, I made efforts in communication.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
QL: Based on the client's feedback, we plan to register this logo for future use on company merchandise such as T-shirts and other goods.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
QL: I spent about a month on gathering materials, making proposals, production, and meetings. However, it feels like we needed a bit more time for adjustments and revisions afterwards.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
QL: This is a commissioned project, and while it is commissioned, I still aim to deliver a logo that is as innovative as possible.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
QL: This project is one I personally handled.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
QL: This project was commissioned by a company related to music. Therefore, when considering inspiration, I focused primarily on elements related to 'sound'.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
QL: When creating designs related to kanji, I am strongly influenced by my former graduate school professor, Yoshimaru Takahashi.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
QL: My mentor's designs strongly reflect Japanese cultural aspects and are used in various products and branding across Japan and Asia. However, my personal style and design philosophy are diametrically opposed to my mentor's, focusing on constructivism and Swiss typography.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
QL: I believe that visually expressing the company's image clearly is a distinctive feature.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
QL: The name was chosen to reflect the company's goal of fostering an individualistic team, as per the client's narrative.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
QL: I completed this design using Adobe Illustrator.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
QL: I originally didn't have much attachment to traditional culture, but through this experience, I've realized that using traditional culture appropriately can be surprisingly beneficial.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
QL: This was completed solely by myself.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
QL: The main role would be to promote kanji culture through visuals.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
QL: Research on the development of kanji is essential.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
QL: While I'm not concerned about creating a memorable logo, I am worried about the legibility of the characters in this logo.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
QL: I hope to show my design to more people and receive evaluation from experts.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
QL: We need to think more deeply about the disregard for the functionality of the characters in this case.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
QL: none

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
