Interview with Mohammed Shais Khan at Monday 29th of May 2023

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
MK: The main principle, idea, and inspiration behind the design of the transformable sofa were to provide privacy and versatility in shared living spaces. The idea stemmed from the need for a functional and sustainable piece of furniture that could adapt to the needs of individuals in these spaces.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
MK: The main focus in designing this work was to create a practical and aesthetically pleasing sofa that incorporated eco-friendly materials and innovative features. The goal was to achieve a balance between functionality, sustainability, and style.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
MK: The future plans for this award winning design may involve exploring opportunities to collaborate with manufacturers or retailers to bring the product to market. Additionally, the design could be further refined based on user feedback and market demand.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
MK: The duration of the design process for this particular concept can vary, but it typically takes 4-6 months considering the prototyping, and refinement stages.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
MK: This design was not explicitly commissioned but was motivated by the desire to address the need for privacy and adaptability in shared living spaces. The inspiration came from observing the challenges faced by individuals in such environments.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
MK: At this stage, the design may be available for production or licensing by other companies, depending on the interest and agreements made. Alternatively, there may be plans to produce the design independently, depending on market opportunities.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
MK: The decision to design this particular type of work was driven by the identified need for a multifunctional piece of furniture that provides privacy and versatility. It aimed to fill a gap in the market and cater to the evolving needs of modern living spaces.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
MK: While other designs and designers may have influenced the overall context of furniture design and sustainability, the specific design of the transformable sofa was developed based on original ideas and considerations for functionality and environmental impact.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
MK: The target customer for this design includes individuals living in shared spaces such as dorms, apartments, or offices, where privacy is limited. It can also appeal to those seeking multifunctional furniture that can adapt to various needs.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
MK: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts is its combination of privacy features, such as the foldable back wall with concealed hinges, avoiding hefty body frames, and its sustainable construction using FSC-certified wood and natural latex foam.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
MK: The name Pinnaculum has a connotation of "high point" or "peak", which evokes a sense of elevated privacy or relaxation, a modular sofa that transforms into a bed and features a unique privacy wall for individuals seeking a comfortable and private space.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
MK: Design tools used during the development of this project may include 3D modeling software, computer-controlled cutting and bending machines, prototyping tools, and traditional woodworking techniques.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
MK: Technology plays a role in the design through the use of computer-controlled cutting and bending machines for precise fabrication and 3D modeling software for visualization and refinement of the design.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
MK: While the design may have been influenced by research on user needs and preferences in shared living spaces, as well as sustainable material choices, the specific design does not heavily rely on extensive data or analytical research.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
MK: Challenges faced during the design and realization of this concept may include balancing the functional requirements of privacy and versatility, ensuring structural integrity by utilizing each piece of the body, and foldable back wall, and optimizing the manufacturing process for efficient production.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
MK: The decision to submit the design to an international design competition was driven by the opportunity to showcase the innovation and potential impact of the Pinnaculum-transformable sofa to a broader audience, gain recognition, and receive valuable feedback.
