Interview with Alexey Borisov at Thursday 22nd of June 2023

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
AB: The design of this project draws inspiration from vintage postcards dating back to the 1950s and 1960s. The aim and significance behind this design was to breathe life into static images that seemed to have been plucked from the pages of history, and bring them to life on screens. The goal was to create a brief narrative that pays homage to the creative spirit of that particular era.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
AB: The objective of this project was to curate a collection of graphical images reminiscent of vintage postcards, specifically portraying scenes from the winter season. The emphasis was on capturing the spirit of winter sports prevalent during that particular era. The artwork featured a diverse array of characters actively participating in various winter sports popular at that time, such as ice skating, skiing, sledding, and other related activities. The intention was to evoke a sense of nostalgia while highlighting the vibrant and dynamic nature of winter sports during that period.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
AB: The design showcased in this project was featured on the Kultura TV channel's broadcast for a duration of three months. Following this period, there are plans to potentially incorporate it into the promotional video of our channel's team.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
AB: The development of the concept and animation for this project took approximately one month. The main references that served as inspiration were already prepared, which facilitated the creative and technical editing of camera angles and the placement of static characters. This phase was completed within a week and brought to its final state. The subsequent month was dedicated to enhancing the overall environment and adding the necessary details to complete the project.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
AB: The selected concept for this project has been in existence for over 10 years and has remained largely consistent in terms of its construction and timing, with only a few exceptions. The aim is to create an animated video that can be adapted to different seasons, including spring, autumn, winter, and summer themes, while incorporating works of visual art. The chosen duration for the video also remains mostly unchanged, ranging from 2 to 3 minutes.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
AB: The design was commissioned by the TV channel with the purpose of promoting and popularizing the world's visual art.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
AB: One notable aspect of this design is the extensive use of recreating selected design objects from 2D to a 3D environment. This approach allows for versatility in utilizing these objects in future projects, offering the flexibility to adjust the camera angles and perspectives, as well as incorporate them seamlessly into virtual environments. This adaptability enhances the potential for reusing and repurposing the 3D objects in various creative endeavors.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
AB: The name, as evident from watching the video, comprises of two descriptive elements representing the chosen style and the sport associated with the respective season.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
AB: During the development of this design and animation, a variety of tools and skills were utilized. The process involved drawing characters and environments based on selected references or inspired by the particular era in question. Motion was animated in both 2D and 3D using tools like After Effects and Cinema 4D. Additionally, 3D texturing tools such as Substance Painter were employed for character rendering. The animation process also encompassed carefully positioning the camera within the virtual space to achieve the desired visual composition.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
AB: The selection of the topic was based on statistical data obtained from the study of the channel's audience. The data revealed a significant majority of viewers aged 45 and older. Taking this into account, topics with a stronger focus on classics and vintage elements were chosen to align with the preferences of the audience. The aim was to cater to the desires and interests of the viewers based on the available data.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
AB: The primary challenge encountered during the development of this design was effectively blending a seamless camera movement through the virtual world while integrating both 2D and 3D animated characters with the surrounding environment.
