Interview with Jati & Kebon Furniture at Tuesday 17th of May 2022 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? JD: I was looking for a shape that could serve as the foundation for a comfortable seat and back and discovered it in a skateboard. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? JD: Best comfort in combination with a minimalistic, original design. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? JD: Hopefully It can become an icon. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? JD: More than a year from the assignment to market. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? JD: It was commissioned. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? JD: Jati & Kebon Furniture manufactures the Skate collection. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? JD: It was a commission. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? JD: A design is always a continuation of what already exists. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? JD: Residential and contract customers. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? JD: Nice detailing and a great comfort. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? JD: Skate is derived from skateboard, which was the primary source of inspiration. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? JD: 3D drawing and render software FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? JD: The shape FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? JD: I collaborated with the weaving craftsmen. They deliver a great job in the weaving. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? JD: Not that much. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? JD: No. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? JD: Making the frame minimalistic but strong. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? JD: Jati & Kebon Furniture proposed and submitted the design. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? JD: Skate Teak is a sibling collection to the Skate Alu collection. I learned a lot about wooden connections while working on the teak wood chair.
