Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Dmytro Lynnyk (DL) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Dmytro Lynnyk by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Iguana here.

Interview with Dmytro Lynnyk at Wednesday 15th of June 2022

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
DL: The idea of the project was laid down by the name of the drink, and the function itself is to give energy.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
DL: Do not leave indifferent a potential buyer who passes by the shelf. Attract attention, arouse interest and desire to take the product in hand.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
DL: We will put the logo of the victory on the bottle and highlight this award in the press. Also this project takes part in other design competitions, we are still waiting for the award.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
DL: 1 week to develop a design concept, and 2 weeks to draw details and build a layout. I fiddled with the size of the scales for a very long time) It was sometimes too large, sometimes too small, and I was looking for the perfect size for a long time.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
DL: The customer wanted a completely different design. Very "traditional" in my opinion. He wanted 2 flat illustrations of lizards on a black tin. In general, I said okay, we will do it if you insist, but we will also offer our own implementation option, having studied the target audience and product features. My idea is that by drinking an energy drink you will become energetic (cutting the jar with claws shows this) and also you will become stronger (the shell of the scales shows this). Of course, after providing 2 concepts, the customer was delighted with our idea.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
DL: It was an order from the energy manufacturer Iguana. The customer had this project on pause for 5 years, and decided to re-enter the market with an updated design. It is made by the customer.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
DL: I just love packaging design. This is my favorite type of design right now. I am very involved in such projects and always try to create something worthy). I often turn down other projects, because we are quite busy, but we take almost all packaging design orders. The only thing is that I don't work with heavy alcohol, vodka is something I will never work with because of my principles.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
DL: Influenced by brand strategist Iryna Lynnyk. She sometimes gives very practical advice, they fly instantly from her tongue. She suggested making a bar background for the logo, as it is now, to add contrast, and it works great. There was also a good 3D visualization done by Alexey Avduevsky.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
DL: Producer of alcoholic beverages in the CIS. They used to produce energy drinks, but then stopped selling. Then, after a 5-year pause, they decided to bring the product to the market, with a new design.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
DL: In the energy drinks section, this is the only product with such an implementation. Scales, claws - this is a very bold and expressive design.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
DL: The name was provided by the customer, in this case it is not my development, I was engaged in design.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
DL: I am an Adobe fan. I used Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop to create the design. Also we use 3D max for visualization.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
DL: Pretty unique logo, scales, and claws. All together - it is unique, brave and unusual!

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
DL: The concept and design were completely created by me. Ksenia Golota, a graphic designer, helped me with the layout of the assortment line. I also worked with 3D designer Alexey Avduesky to create 3D models and visualizations.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
DL: Yes, brand strategist Iryna Lynnyk participated in this project. She conducted in-depth interviews with the target audience. I got insights from her report and conclusions on the target audience. I also studied trends and conducted competitor analysis.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
DL: At first it was difficult with the customer, because he came from his idea and insisted on its realization. I needed to convince him that his idea was not very strong, and we needed another one. But I did not want to offend him, so we discussed and agreed that we would create 2 design concepts for him to choose from, his idea and ours.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
DL: The design above is very expressive. And I fell in love with him in the process of working on it, so I decided that I need to show it to the professional international community, colleagues, so that they would look and tell their opinion)

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
DL: I just had a great 3 weeks working on this project, it was a great time when I sat at night and could not tear myself away from the project). I like that my works are different in style and not similar to each other. I try to abstract from my preferences and create design concepts for the target audience.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
