Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Yen C Chen (YC) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Yen C Chen by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Simplest Happiness here.

Interview with Yen C Chen at Monday 11th of May 2020

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
YC: With "playing" as the purpose of the video, children who are playing can best show pure happiness, and hope that the audience will have the same feeling when watching the movie. Last year the Chinese zodiac is the pig, so I designed the sliced pig, and it's a pun in "many hot movies" in Chinese. The color is made of red and gold which can best represent the traditional Chinese year but also feel modern.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
YC: It's a design job that a channel does every year, this time I set my goal for this job: to make the audience feel happy from watching. There's a highly circulated video on Youtube about a baby laughing all the time, which can induce the audience to laugh. I hope that the video in addition to the channel needs to convey the function, but also let the audience temporarily forget the reality of trouble, think of the most simple happiness as a child.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
YC: I will post it to my facebook.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
YC: From start to finish almost takes About 2 month.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
YC: Every Chinese new year ident is the important project in TV channel. This animation comes from one of the design of the movie channel package.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
YC: I created it for TV channels.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
YC: My father is a movie-loving person, I remember when I was a child, we nestled in the dark living room to watch the movies, although it was not always able to fully understand, but a lot of visual creativity and drama, I believe there is a subtle impact.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
YC: Pixar's movies always inspire me.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
YC: 15 to 40-year-old moviegoers.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
YC: Each person's journey is different, and I think this work is the result of my experience.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
YC: "The Simplest Happiness". I hope the audience can remember that pure happiness feeling when they was a child.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
YC: The project was realized using adobe software and 3d softwares.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
YC: I've worked as a designer in a variety of different industries, and these experiences have allowed me to accumulate a lot of energy, and luckily they have given me a lot of creative space. I hope my work is to bring people positive, I do in the process of design also hold the same attitude.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
YC: I'm done on my own.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
YC: Use technology to help me communicate my ideas.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
YC: For this particular project I used as a reference set design in Chinese new year and character design and different animation artist. Also research the physical simulation of the moving objects.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
YC: The most challenging part in this project was let the character gratifying look and to keep adding elements and details while keeping the composition looking simple and balanced.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
YC: There's a voice in my ear that tells me to go.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
YC: Do every design carefully, from what can be brought about to change humanity as a starting point.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
YC: No, enough. Thank you for question to me.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
