Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Ascanio Zocchi (AZ) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Ascanio Zocchi by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Ska V29 here.

Interview with Ascanio Zocchi at Tuesday 12th of May 2020

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
AZ: Like so many inhabitants of the Dolomites, the passage of the storm Vaia, I was very impressed emotionally, I will always remember that night, For many hours I felt the fury of Vaia, with the winds blowing up to 200 kilometers per hour slapping the forests of our mountains , only in the morning with the first light of dawn, I was able to observe the damage caused to the forest. The first images of the woods behind the house were impressed on my memory and after a few days I began to sketch this tangle of dead trees on paper. The Skianti collection was born from this experience.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
AZ: The aesthetic factor of the SKIANTI table is characterized by the table top made of fir wood and represents the forest after the passage of the storm, overlapping trunks crashed on each other, randomly, as in the game of Shanghai, represented here by the axes overlapping that make up a decorative weave. The edge of the inclined table signifies the strength and precariousness of nature, where you can see the head of the wood, in some places cracked by the force of the crash on the ground. The base made of burnished steel represents the moment when the wind begins to enter the wood and bends the plants randomly. The trees tilted on different axes represent the wind that came from multiple directions that evening, and crashed on the woods in a random way, slapping the territory and transforming the environment. The design respects the fundamental laws of ergonomics and is centered on the harmonic design of the golden section.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
AZ: proceed with the complete collection of different sizes, and other furniture and household items.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
AZ: from the project to the product six months have passed

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
AZ: I was very impressed by the passage of the storm and with this work I want to contribute to the protection of the forest and its reconstruction.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
AZ: it is produced in Italy, but I am also looking for producers and customers in other states, planning to rent the rights.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
AZ: a lover of nature and design, this table represents nature, the forest, with the different finishes and essences of wood can be placed in any environment

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
AZ: his message, the memory of the phenomenon that hit the forests of the dolomites, nature is unpredictable ... it is strong and also fragile at the same time.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
AZ: the name indicates the date of the natural phenomenon, V vaia, 29 the day.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
