Interview with YuJin Jung at Sunday 3rd of May 2020

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
YJ: I was inspired by this design by looking at extracting and combining data from different perspectives based on big data. I developed a design style that suits each topic by considering the characteristics of each topic for each infographic product. For each product, I derived an idea from elements related to the topic, developed an overall concept, and developed a story. I made use of GIF animation. In other words, I made it possible to communicate the content more effectively by giving the infographic a movement.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
YJ: Most consumption is usually done through credit cards and is recorded. By analyzing various traces and desires of consumers in the process of analyzing, extracting, and combining vast amounts of consumption data, I focused on conveying easily and interestingly what consumers exist, what types of consumption exist.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
YJ: After this award-winning design, I would like to experience a variety of different projects that combine data, design, and technology.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
YJ: I spent about 2 weeks analyzing the data, deriving insights, and establishing the design concept. It took a few weeks to come up with a concept, set a direction, and get the job done.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
YJ: I was commissioned this design work from BC card, a credit card company in Korea.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
YJ: This design is currently being used by the BC card company in Korea.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
YJ: I believed that a one-page gif-like infographic could maximize people’s interest and the effectiveness of information delivery. I thought this design would facilitate the spread of credit card use and demonstrate the specifics of the situation.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
YJ: While I was working on this design, I went to various places to experience it myself. I was able to get motivation from people I met in my daily life.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
YJ: The target customers of this design are those who use credit cards and those who are interested in what kind of consumption other people use.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
YJ: When I created this design, this was the first example of designing a moving infographic in the Korean credit card industry. This design conveyed complex and difficult data visually to people, making it easy and fun to understand. It is designed to be delicate and I think graphic elements such as toys differentiated them from other similar designs.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
YJ: I named the design based on insights into the data of consumers consuming by using credit cards. ‘All in One’ means that all services can be provided in one place.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
YJ: For this design, I used a pencil, notebook, sketchbook, Excel, Tableau, Adobe Illustrator and After Effects tools.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
YJ: I think the most unique thing about this design is that it provides interesting by implementing a complex and vast amount of information through animations that are easier for customers to understand.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
YJ: I had been helped by big data analysts and employees working at the BC card company in Korea for this design.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
YJ: I was able to efficiently analyze large amounts of data and find patterns through statistical techniques of big data. In addition, the required data could be quickly derived through statistical techniques. I’ve made this design easier for those who see it, and I was able to visualize it using isometric techniques so that I could see the space in three dimensions at once. With the help of these techniques, I think I have succeeded in creating a moving infographic to draw more interest from clients and customers.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
YJ: Since this design was a project based on big data analysis, study, and research for data analysis and interpretation were essential. I went through the process of understanding what data can mean and researching social and cultural phenomena. Eventually, I collected and analyzed consumption big data by age, region, business district, and business channel, and captured the keyword trend of representative consumption, and found insight by connecting related data in three dimensions.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
YJ: While realization of the concept, the problem I faced was to analyze the consumption trend and derive insight from what perspective. Based on the insights I derived, I developed this design style that goes well with each series topic. How to deliver visualizations to make people interested and easy to understand was a series of my worries for each infographic product. Also, I needed to be careful that gif-like animation doesn’t damage the contents of the infographic.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
YJ: I wanted to check my design work through this international design competition. In preparing for this competition, I thought it was important for me to learn and grow a lot. In fact, I am happy to learn a lot from this competition experience.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
YJ: I have learned how to get the overall design direction based on big data – how to organize and analyze consumption big data, and connect related data in three dimensions to find insight. As it was designed as a series and passed through each series, I think my ability to analyze and solve data was developed more and more efficiently.
