At its core, Advanced Design operates at two complementary levels: the artifact level, where comprehensive solutions are created for today's needs, and the systems level, where frameworks are established to guide future design evolution. This dual focus enables practitioners to not only solve immediate problems but to establish the conditions for ongoing innovation.
What distinguishes Advanced Design is its deliberate integration of:
- Established design considerations (aesthetics, ergonomics, usability, production feasibility)
- Strategic elements (market positioning, brand development, distribution logistics)
- Meta-design components (design guidelines, governance frameworks, advancement protocols)
- Anticipatory methodologies (scenario planning, future forecasting, vision articulation)
This subtrack explores how Advanced Design methodologies are being applied across economic sectors, from materials and manufacturing to services, information systems, and cultural infrastructure. Sessions will examine case studies where Advanced Design approaches have successfully navigated complexity, created lasting impact, and established evolutionary pathways for continued development.
Participants will gain insights into practical frameworks for implementing Advanced Design thinking within their organizations, methods for developing cross-disciplinary design capabilities, and approaches for balancing immediate implementation with long-term vision.
The primary aim of the Advanced Design Track is to develop the advanced design literature and fundamental definitions. A secondary aim focuses on the application of Advanced Design in the form of Design Management, Design Strategy, and Research, to discover thinking patterns and principles in advanced design. The third aim is to discuss the design’s role and vision in other fields and how design processes or tools are integrated in such fields, with the aim to focus on the multidisciplinary role of design.
