| DESIGN NAME: Milk Multifunctional Light PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Light INSPIRATION: They wanted to explore the potential of a material that can be processed and molded relatively easily and still let light pass through despite being made of metal. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: They decided to take an everyday object and re-create it with completely different materials. They used stainless steel mesh to create the shape of a Tetra Pak, the global standard milk carton. As the light passes through the Tetra Pak shaped mesh, it creates unique shadows, and the fixture itself can be placed on the floor, or hung from a wall or ceiling. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This lighting can be used such as putting on the floor, hanging from the ceiling, and hanging on the wall. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The material of this lighting is stainless mesh. We designed a easy way to make this lighting. First, we shaped the sheets of stainless mesh into a cylinder. Second, we spot-welded the top and the bottom of them. We could design a product by the simply method for creating. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: W170mm x D170mm x H170mm / Stainless, mesh TAGS: light, stainless, stainless mesh, mesh RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research of this project is to explore the possibilities of the material, stainless mesh. We found stainless mesh is readily processable material by handwork. CHALLENGE: We challenged to design the soft shape of a Tetra Pak by using hard stainless mesh. By painstakingly hand bending the stainless steel mesh we were able to add significant flexibility to the metal. The resulting material looks and feels closer to paper than metal.
