DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
BIT Engineering Training Center

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Training Center

INSPIRATION:
The logo of Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) features the pattern of a pigeon standing on the tree, which conveys the Institute's idea of "Cultivating Talents, Maintaining Peace". The tree symbolizes young people with a promising feature. The designers applied abstract symbols derived from the logo to the facade design, and combined elements of the same geometric shape with abstract variations, which formed a unified and simple tree-shaped structure on the facade, resonating with BIT Logo.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The overall architecture is mainly toned in white and gray, dotted with red and yellow window frames of some blocks, which matches the hues of the surroundings. The facade mainly uses triangular elements, equipped with square windows, some of which are combined with triangular screen-printed glass to create varying light and shadows. The yellow gusset plates on the glass echo the red color on the exterior walls, strengthening the sense of layering for the facade.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Display and exhibition spaces are on the second floor of the teaching building, where achievements of the students and the Engineering Training Center are separately displayed. Besides, through the glass window, practical training workshop on the first floor can be clearly seen, which serves for regular engineering training, advanced manufacturing technology training and facility supporting.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Location: Liangxiang Town, Fangshan District, Beijing, China

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Architecture, Building and Structure Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
In summer, the "stack effect" in the atrium reduces the heat and strengthens cross ventilation. Besides, when opening windows, the different indoor and outdoor atmospheric pressure ensures natural ventilation, hence cooling the atrium. In winter, sunlight directly shines onto the third floor in the atrium, which guarantees abundant daylight and a comfortable environment.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Development land area: 16,500 sqm Total construction area: 33,475.77 sqm building's land coverage area: 3,051.42 sqm(1900 sqm of civil air-defense area included) Base area: 6,500 sqm Building coverage ratio: 40% Building height: 44.1 m Bike parking spaces: 300 Floor area ratio: 1.82

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
In the design process, the design team had full discussions with teachers of Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) and tried to make the architectural design to fit the curriculum and modes of teaching. After communication with more than 100 teachers and students, the design finally met the demands of teaching activities.

CHALLENGE:
The challenges lay in: - ensuring that the training workshop and teaching activities are closely connected while not interfering with each other; - tackling natural ventilation problem arose from the width of part of the building; - fitting both traditional teaching logic and open & interactive teaching mode; - challenging traditional teaching buildings with the project's innovative facade design featuring the shape of tree branches.
