| DESIGN NAME: Grace PRIMARY FUNCTION: Light INSPIRATION: Grace is inspired from the way of Geisha (芸者, traditional Japanese female entertainer). To become a Geisha, is to learn and practice the art of woman, such as the way of dancing (Buyō, 舞踊), the way of making oneself appealing, the way of arranging flower (Kadō, 華道) and tea (chadō, 茶道). Thus, several elements was put into the design consideration. When the design is inspired from the culture of Geisha, We like to emphasize on the simplicity of the Eastern way who brings solemn and peaceful atmosphere. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Grace is a set of lighting designed to complement indoor atmosphere by adding delicate feminine elements. Using the Japanese handmade paper as the fan-like light shade, gives the space a gentle texture and rich-layered light, and besides, the round shape of the fan is interpreted as “fulfill” in the Far Eastern culture. The metal tube in front of the floor light, seamlessly integrated into the overall setting, serves as a vessel for various flower arrangement and green plants. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Grace light is designed flat-packed. It can be easily assembled by a prepared hex key. The vessel in front of the floor light is a free space to play with different plant arrangement according to user’s preference. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2018 in Tainan, Taiwan and finished in January 2019 in Tainan, Taiwan. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Lighting Products and Fixtures Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The fan shade is delicately hand-made to have both strong and transmitted quality. The body is made of welded iron and coated in black. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 600mm x Depth 190mm x Height 1605mm TAGS: Geisha, Kadō, Folding Fan, Light, Indoor, Plant, Flower Vase, RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Initially, We collected photos and research materials from the Geisha culture, especially the kimono, the hairdressing, the make-up that Geisha wear. We started to generate design sketches after discussing and setting up the design direction. We realized that the texture of the fan element is crucial. Therefore, we spent weeks to look for types of paper, until we have found the handmade paper which is both good in translucency but also structural strong enough. CHALLENGE: We finalize this project in limited period of time (4 months). The Challenge tasks includes: 1. Find the right light shade material. 2. Define the overall structure and size. 3. Communication with the manufacturer back and forth for detail dimensions.
