| DESIGN NAME: Moods PRIMARY FUNCTION: Desk Table Lamp INSPIRATION: Telling the tale of different moods and picturing them, using design to make moods manifest. The objective was to create a playful yet functional desk-lamp. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: MOODS, a playful desk lamp with an hidden feature. Completely adjustable and integrated with smart film technology, the desk lamp let you play with the softness and hardness of light effects to suit your different light needs. Need a reading light? Turn the leds switch dimmer to the level you want and the Smart film transparent with just a touch! Need ambient lighting? Swivel the lampshade upwards and turn the smart film switch opaque. The base is intentionally designed in an oversize torus shape, in order to ensure stability and to add the functionality of a stationery holder. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The light fixture is deceptively simple, but as you start to interact, its ingenuity is revealed. The uniqueness lies into the featuring of a lampshade integrated smart film. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: December 2018 prototype ongoing. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The smart film technology applied in a luminaire is the core idea of this design. Smart film, also called Switchable film, is a product that is capable of adjusting light transmission between transparent and opaque. The principle behind the so called "Magic Glass" is the Suspended Particle technology that is very similar to the concept of artificial magnets. When an electric current is passed through the film, the liquid crystals align themselves into straight lines allowing all the light to pass through without scattering. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 400 mm, 416 mm, 196 mm TAGS: smart lamp, desk lamp, smart film RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Constantly looking for cross technology design applications, I found out that smart film technology, other then privacy control applications, has a great potential to be applied in light control. CHALLENGE: The first lampshade mockup has been made with a wrapped smart film. We are currently developing a moulded polycarbonate lampshade with integrated smart film layer.
