| DESIGN NAME: Houndstuds PRIMARY FUNCTION: Original Ornament On Leather Goods INSPIRATION: Houndstuds is inspired by the classic hounds-tooth pattern and pyramid studs. Although they are widely used in the fashion industry but they are often seen as incompatible with each other. Hounds-tooth pattern is seen as a classic pattern of elegance whereas Pyramid studs are seen in rock and punk styles. They however still share some similar structure and shape. Houndstuds is created by the decomposition and reconstruction of both classic elements. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Houndstuds (Hounds-tooth Studs) present the classic hounds-tooth in an original 3D context to revolutionize the classic pyramid studs and can be applied to a variety of fashion items. Each studs features a 3D hounds-tooth and together they create a 3D Hounds-tooth pattern which creates a ground-breaking sense of touch for the pattern. Increase in reflective surfaces also brings a luxurious appeal to the applied products. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Our Houndstuds collection includes a variety of leather goods. The arrangement of the studs can differ from each season. Our customers love the distinctiveness of the studs and the provocative appeal of the leather goods. The extra shininess from the irregular surfaces of the studs also elevate the presentation of the product. The Houndstuds collection can bring a different vibe to the daily outlook. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Launched as Midnight Factory Spring Summer 2018 Collection in Hong Kong, Houndstuds has become our signature collection since its launch. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Midnight Factory’s Houndstuds collection features stylistic designs, fine full grained leather and our signature Houndstuds. Each Houndstud is carefully assembled onto the product by hand in order to form a perfect hounds-tooth pattern in the overall presentation. It took months for the creation of a 3D hounds-tooth pattern using our Houndstuds. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Stud Body-Width: 16 mm, Length: 16 mm, Height: 3 mm Stud Anchor-Height: 4 mm TAGS: Midnight Factory, Auston Tse, Houndstuds, Houndstooth, Houndstooth Pattern, Cardholders, Leather Goods RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our design process was based in Hong Kong. Based on our market research, there is a lack of products which feature provocative style in the market. Research of the form of the We have also conducted research on our Houndstuds, and we have not seen anything alike in the market. CHALLENGE: Although Houndstud is produced as a single stud, the usage of the stud is to form a 3D hounds-tooth pattern which requires a very accurate alignment of the studs in order to simulate the classic hounds-tooth pattern. However, due to the fact that the Houndstud has a structurally complicated form, it is extremely difficult to align the Houndstuds perfectly in production by using a single anchor on the stud. Therefore, a dual anchor was developed to fix this problem. A dual anchor on the Houndstud allows each stud to be fixed on two focal points, thereby they can be stabilized on the material with precision for subsequent assembling process. A tailored bracket for the stud is also introduced to minimize the space between the stud and the product surface so the stud can closely attach to the product surface and would not fall off easily. Sewing of the product was another challenge that we faced in production. Due to the special form and the extension of the studs, it is very difficult to assemble the studs onto the product leaving a desired distance towards edges since the normal presser foot cannot go through the irregular surface easily. Therefore, a tailor presser foot was made to ensure the studs are assembled onto the product with the best presentation. Moreover, a special mould is developed for assembling the products in order to present the 3-dimensional pattern in the perfect arrangement.
