| DESIGN NAME: Shanghai Bay PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence and Private Club INSPIRATION: The timing of the aesthetic taste about the living environments quickly changing and the popularity of the modern lifestyles in China's metropolis, the location of one of the most iconic landmarks in Shanghai, the owner of a representative new trendy group, which provide the possibilities to re-examine the concept of a residence. Besides, the enlarged living spaces and the positioning of the second residence give the opportunities to pull the focus away from the daily necessities with a poetic perspective and a sense of distance. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A film investor chose to reside at the West Bund of Huangpu River in Shanghai. A 1200 square meters flat requires the functions of residence, work, recreation and social contacts. A smooth circulation was designed to run through the private and open areas, and delicate boundaries were created to make spaces flexible. A bow shape layout with its long edge facing to the West Bund, like a natural gallery, invites its master to move inside with outside varying views. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The different group of people get together in different rooms, some are relaxing in the living room, some are standing in the balcony smoking, while the others are talking seriously in the study room. At some point, they gather in the gallery enjoying the city views or movies and wines. It happens every time when the master comes back here from travelling. After several busy days, it returns to calmness and then moves in cycles. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2016 and finished in November 2017 in Shanghai. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Materials and decorations were carefully chosen and applied to keep the interior neutral, calm and multipurpose. Details are highly demanded in dealing with materials and construction technologies. The materials include marble, wooden veneer, glass, mirror, wallpaper and black stainless steel. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: East unit 530 sqm, West unit 530 sqm, Gallery 180 sqm, total 1240 sqm. The case study research was applied to collect in-depth information. Interviews and conversations were held for getting a whole picture of his daily life. Observations of his personal belongings were used for material researches on his habits and preferences. The style of living environments representing the attitude towards lives has changed from rich adornment to modern simplicity in only 5 years in China's metropolis. The timing, the location, and the people provided the possibilities to redefine the concept of a residence. CHALLENGE: A flexible space is required for individuals, family, friends or business partners, and a smooth circulation should be created to run through the private and open areas while considering the relationship of inside and outside. Details are highly demanded in dealing with materials and construction technologies.
