DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
One and Three Books

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Editorial Design Workshop and Exhibition

INSPIRATION:
One and Three Books is inspired by the work One and Three Chairs by Joseph Kosuth. In his artistic proposition, Kosuth 'represents one chair three ways: as a manufactured chair, as a photograph, and as a copy of a dictionary entry for the word “chair.” ' (Reference: https://www.moma.org/learn/moma_learning /joseph-kosuth-one-and-three-chairs-1965 ) The former invites to a reflection about an object and its multiple representations.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
One and Three Books intends to strengthen competence, character and creative independence. Thus, it relies on a combination of both factors historical-intellectual consciousness—by means of the research conducted via the literature review—and experimental independence. It allows participants to produce their own cognitive and expressive positioning within the field, concluding in self-confidence and self-recognition. Thus, it simultaneously produces in the student a sense of belonging to the design field and a sense of authorship. Parallel to the former, it help participants to question what design is as an object of communication in a wider sense. It also encourages them to rethink how a designer becomes an active voice in producing meaning.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
In the project One and Three Books, we seek to establish a (visual) connection between a textual definition of a book and the way participants express the meaning of these words through the making of the object book. In order to do this, first, participants are invited to collaboratively research diverse definitions of ‘book’. They are encouraged to propose their individual definitions of what a book is. Second, individual book definitions are to be visualized by book prototypes. Each ‘new’ book definition serves its author as a platform for experimentation in order to challenge the anatomy of the book. Participants test book changes by producing blank book scale models or dummies. Last, participants produce a final book that communicates their initial definition of the term.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
One and Three Books pedagogical project is currently being developed within the curriculum of the Editorial Design tutorial course, a course that is offered to senior students at the School of Art, Design and Media at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore since 2009.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Production and realisation technology varies in dependence of participants' needs.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Mixed media in dependence of the individual books created, A4 sheets for the individual book definitions, and exhibition tables for the exhibition of the outcomes of the workshop.

TAGS:
Book design, book definition, book anatomy, representation of a book, One and Three Chairs.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
One and Three Books is both an ongoing pedagogical project in a form of a workshop, and a curatorial project—in an exhibition setting—that shows the outcome of this workshop. It analyzes the relationship between the book as a concept and the book as an object of communication. Inspired by the artwork One and Three Chairs by Joseph Kosuth, it is a conceptual proposition that investigates the definition of a book, while also exploring the form of the book as object through its production process.

CHALLENGE:
To visualise participants creative thinking in an effective manner, as well as to break conventions when approaching book design and layout.
