Melting Stone

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Melting Packaging

INSPIRATION:
In ancient oriental, alcoholic beverages are served warm as it is believed to help increase the moist flavour of the wine as well as bringing the warm effect. Therefore, through "Melting Stone", we hope to introduce this ancient wine drinking culture to the young generation and western community nowadays.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Melting Stone, as the name suggests, is a dissolved packaging. Based on the melting temperature concept, a series of alcoholic beverage packages is designed where the packaging will dissolve at the same time when the wine is poured with hot water. This brings newness to the alcoholic beverages packaging itself and interactive aspect for the customer as the packaging itself is designed with "marble stone" pattern which will dissolve and stay put to the wine bottle and together create a custom-made product.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
A series of alcoholic beverages that melts through hot temperature. The packaging is designed with a special material with different marble patterns that will dissolve when it is poured into hot water. This is a perfect gift for the recipient to experience a new way of opening a wine package where they got to create their own custom-made alcoholic beverages bottle before enjoying drinking the alcoholic beverages that are served warm.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in June 2016 and finished in May 2017 in Taiwan, and was exhibited in Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Hall 1 in May 2017.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The purpose of this research is to identify the interesting way to open alcoholic beverages packaging. By using a variety of meltable materials and different ways of heating, the dissolvable plastic material is the most suitable and stabilizing material. Aside from the stereotype of opening packaging, our overall approach was to create a uniqueness and novelty value packaging which can present the characteristics of the product combined with the way the to open the packaging at the same time.

CHALLENGE:
The most difficult part of the design was figuring the way to manipulate the material to desired thickness, shape, and texture while making sure it does not blister. The overall construction was also created with detail measurement such as slope on the top part of packaging which specially modified to hold the amount of hot water to melt the packaging.
