PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Ash Tray

INSPIRATION:
Since the smoking policy newly released in Beijing, many smokers turn into the outdoor space of the city instead of the sealed corner of the office. The policy succeeded to push people working in CBD to the open area, they enjoy smoking under the sky. Meanwhile, the historical Hutong life has been keeping the same for years, and the Hutong locals need more time to adjust their lifestyle to the policy. This time, we challenge to keep the locals' habit and slightly realize the policy in the Hutong district.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Design often changes the lifestyle to improve the function or the quality. Sometimes, the design could badly restrict or change our habit. This time, we rethink our own design attitude that the habit helps the design . A number of locals in this Hutong district still throw away cigarette butt in the drain. Instead of establishing smoking area at the corner of the street, we proposed to add ash tray function on the drain cover. In that way, the locals do not have to change their habit, which , to some extent, improves smoking manner.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Smoking people on the street is always looking for ash tray for their cigarette butt. Sometimes, they are throw them into drain to hide their bad manner instead of throw into the street. This ash tray can change their careless habit to good manner.

The installation project started in July 2015 in Beijing and finished in October 2015, and was exhibited in Beijing International Design Week 2015.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
After the smoking policy newly released in Beijing, which prohibited smoking in the public indoor space, on-site research on the different typology of the city resulted in discover the various behaviors of the smoking people. People in the CBD area tend to find ash tray in the outdoor public space. On the other hand, it seems like that those who live in the Hutong area( the old downtown area) do not pay attention to the new policy.
