DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
máolus

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Digital Writing Instrument

INSPIRATION:
Recently, numerous sketching and drawing mobile apps has been launched which can extend the capability of tablet computers into professional drawing tools. To accommodate this need, many drawing accessories such as drawing stylus and capacitive brushes are offered. However, these drawing tools are designed in ways to suit the western style for sketching or painting. After preliminary research, a few mobile apps specially designed for Chinese calligraphy practices on the tablet computers are available on the market; however, there are no suitable writing instruments offered for such practices. Due to this reason, a market opportunity has been identified to develop a digital drawing instrument to suit the unique style of Chinese calligraphy and painting.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The name of this design is called maolus - meaning mao bi (Chinese brush) + stylus. In Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, it is practiced in a unique way that requires the user to hold the brush in a vertical gesture. Moreover, the tip of the brush is always kept pointed for easier control of brush stroke width. The nylon rope at the end of the brush is a salute to the traditional Chinese brush design. Overall, the maolus is a combination of Chinese heritage with today's technology, integrating the past wisdom into future possibility.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The maolus is used exactly like a traditional Chinese brush - but without the mess of cleaning the brush in traditional Chinese art practices. The user simply launches the application on his/her tablet computer, and directly uses the maolus to write or paint on the screen - enjoying Chinese painting or calligraphy practiced is made much more convenience.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project was completed within a month's time from conceptual stage, market and product research, to the structural design and final 3D rendering.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The maolus is relatively easy to produce. The materials used include aluminum metal for the brush shaft and conductive rubber for the brush tip. Aluminum is chosen for the shaft because of its physical properties that are very suited for this design. Its ability to resist corrosion, durability, lightweight, color variety (after dying process) and electric conductivity makes it the perfect material for the brush shaft. As for the brush tip, a conductive material must be chosen, and conductive rubber is most suitable because it could be molded into various sizes and shapes. At the end of the brush, there is a nylon rope for hooking the brush on to the brush rack just like traditional way.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Secondary research on similar product / design on the market. More research were done through the internet to seek for drawing/painting/calligraphy applications for the mobile devices. Lastly, focus group were conduct on digital artist to understand more on their needs and practices.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge for this project is to design the brush in a way that preserves the heritage of the Chinese art while introducing a modern look to it.
