DESIGN NAME:
Tenochtitlan

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Earrings

INSPIRATION:
Tenochtitlan earrings are inspired by the ancient Aztec capital of Mexico and famous Mesoamerican pyramids. The city of Tenochtitlan has become foundation of Mexico City, one of the biggest cities in the world. In a mysterious way, Mesoamerican step pyramids resemble those built in the most ancient period of Egypt civilization. The city itself was laid out in concentric circles. An idea came to combine the shapes of the pyramids with those of the city into these minimalist earrings.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The minimalist design of Tenochtitlan is a three-step rounded pyramid (cone), which is just about 1cm in diameter. The outer/lowest and inner/highest layers of the earring contain fine intersecting engravings, which create visual impressions of set gemstones when lit. The medium layer is made shiny to accentuate the outer engraved layers, thus creating an aesthetic harmony. The backside of earrings represents the city layout and is shaped as concentric circles, making it also more ergonomic.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Tenochtitlan are stud earrings, very easy to use. You stick the stud into the earlobe and tighten with a scroll on the back of the ear. The minimalist design allows the earrings to fit nearly any kind of clothing, from evening gowns to swimming suits. You may choose between golden or silver metal color to match your style, dress, or mood. The backside made of concentric circles also makes earrings more comfortable to wear, as it minimizes the surface of contact between the metal and the skin.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Tenochtitlan earrings were created and presented to public for the first time in 2018 at the exposition on occasion of 10eme Salon Creations de Brabant Wallon, Belgium.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The production involves manual design, 3D design and prototyping, high precision casting, laser welding, as well as manual finishing. For sterling silver rhodium-plated and 24k gold plated silver versions, it also involves electroplating.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Tenochtitlan are stud earrings in conic shape, with diameter of approximately 1cm and height (thickness) of approximately 0,5cm. The pieces are available in 6 types of metal, namely 18k and 14k white gold with palladium, 18k and 14k yellow gold, as well as rhodium-plated sterling silver and gold plated silver.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
I read through the history of Tenochtitlan, analyzed its contemporary reconstructions and its ancient 16th century city plans. I looked for ways of reflecting both the impressive shapes of its giant step pyramids and the concentric city plan into a single design, while experimenting with minimalism. An idea came to create a conic step pyramid on the front side, combined with the concentric circles on the backside of the earrings. The fine-tuning of the design was done at 3D modeling stage.

CHALLENGE:
The design challenge was to fit the concept of giant Mesoamerican pyramids as well as Tenochtitlan city plan into very small earrings, and to accentuate all necessary details, while making the earrings good to wear, pleasantly looking and fun. These are one of the reasons why the original stepped pyramid got transformed into a stepped cone along the way. The production challenge was to reproduce all small details and fine engravings accurately on such a tiny model.

PROFILE:
From the background, Olga is a professional historian and a psychologist. But since she was a little girl, she has always had passion for jewellery. She created her very first jewellery designs while still at high school during the breaks. Around 2003, Olga started with fantasy jewellery as a hobby but soon realised that she wants to take it to the next level. In 2011-2013, Olga studied jewellery making, enameling, modeling and design at the Arts et Metiers school in Brussels, from which she has got a diploma with the greater distinction. And to further excel in the mastership, she took private lessons from Eduard K., the mysterious jewellery virtuoso known by very few as the true author of exquisite masterpieces made for major jewellery houses in Belgium as well as Philippe Bouchez, one of the pioneers of new-age stonesetting in Europe. "The jewelry pieces created by Olga are unique objects of art, born through creative inspirations just like paintings or sculptures. These creations reveal powerful emotions while being full of poetry. Whether it's about the fantasy or luxury jewelry, she creates all pieces by her magic fingers using various materials, shapes and colours. In her new luxury gold and silver jewelry collection, we can discover this subtle touch of her soul, which is what marks the real uniqueness of jewelry creations by Olga." (Patricia Timmermans) We are glad to share with you the passion and inspiration of Olga, and hope you will really enjoy it.
