DESIGN NAME:
Petal

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Office Chair

INSPIRATION:
Office chair must be supportive to spinal cord, especially on the Lumbar Spine part. With the continuous movement changes of user, the angle of chair should be protean to fit user's balance point under different actions and postures. The design concept is using the reaction force on chair against user's weight and hence the angle of chair is flexible to adapt user's posture instantly. Besides, the shape is inspired by petal, a warping outwardly shape carrying the elastic energy spontaneously.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The main spine in bone-shape is connecting the backrest and the rear seat plate. The backrest is hollow, with mattresses mounted at the top and bottom respectively, in order to fit various statures. The seat plates split nearby ischial tuberosity and linked up by a spine underneath. The front-fixing swivel is installed under the spine underneath to provide larger space to sink at the rear.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The hollow structure on backrest reduces the contact area, hence the contact pressure. Besides, the space between the spine allows the backrest shifts slightly to adapt user's shape; the rear seat plate allows user to sink at different level, depends on how much the user leans on the chair. In the visitor chair version, V-shaped wire legs installed, which allow the same sinking effect on the seat. Thus, the spine underneath is essential to apply the same mechanism on different versions.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in March 2021 in Hong Kong and finished in June 2020 in Hong Kong.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Considering the production and the properties to fulfil the design concept, the main material used on the spine and frames is PP VLF, which provides the flexibility and stiffness like springboard to against user's weight. The chair can be produced by molding in parts and assembly in factory. In the Executive chair version, an additional headrest can be inserted on the spine.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
According to chiropractors, Lumbar Spine, the 5 joints at the bottom above the pelvis, is the part most necessary to be upright whilst sitting, otherwise many spinal problems will be caused. Meanwhile, most office chairs on sale usually contains numerous components, which is ineffective in term of cost and assembly. Besides, the structure tolerates low interaction with users, as users need to adjust most of the joints beforehand.

CHALLENGE:
To design an office chair maximising ergonomic support with minimum adjustments, the design concept is related to the reaction force by the structure and materials. Thus, the materials must be strong and stiff to support users' weight. Meanwhile, the position of Lumbar Spine is slightly different on different statures. The position and shape of the backrest must fit at 5th and 95th percentile of general population; hence the cross-section of backrest is oval and mattress mounted at the bottom.
